The in Argentina located Archdiocese of Mercedes-Luján (lat. Archidioecesis Mercedensis-Luianensis , span. Arquidiócesis de Mercedes-Luján ), headquartered in Mercedes was on 20 April 1934 the diocese of La Plata excised and as a diocese built Mercedes. Since May 10, 1989 it has been given the double name Mercedes-Luján to honor the most important pilgrimage site in the country - Luján . On November 21, 1997 the diocese was elevated to an immediate archdiocese .

The diocese joined 1,947 areas for the new diocese of San Nicolas de los Arroyos and in 1957 for the Diocese of Nueve de Julio and the Diocese of Santa Rosa from.

Pope Francis got the Archdiocese on 4 October 2019 for metropolitan and imputed while addressing dioceses Merlo-Moreno , Nueve de Julio and Zárate-Campana as suffragan dioceses . On the same date, the Pope accepted the age-related resignation of the previous archbishop, Agustín Roberto Radrizzani SDB , and appointed the previous auxiliary bishop Jorge Eduardo Scheinig as archbishop and first metropolitan of the new ecclesiastical province .

In Luján there is the large Marian pilgrimage church, Basilica of Our Lady of Luján , which annually attracts up to two million pilgrims.
