The Eschenbach is a forest brook of the Virngrund in the Ostalbkreis in northeastern Baden-Württemberg . The nearly three-kilometer long, about running in a southwesterly direction stream flows at Jagstzell - Keuerstadt with the slightly shorter right Brandbachstrasse to Fischbach together in the upper Jagst flows. Sometimes the Eschenbach run to the Fischbach is struck.

geography

course

The Eschenbach arises about one and a half kilometers before the north portal of the Virngrund tunnel of the A 7 on the section between the Dinkelsbühl / Fichtenau and Ellwangen exits . The source is about 497  m above sea level. NN about 2.1 km west of Ellenberg - Breitenbach on a forest path in the Schlägle forest . After the first hundred meters of its consistently south-westerly course, the stream crosses under the autobahn route, after which it is soon followed by a farm road in its deepening forest valley between Eschenbuck on the right and Reute on the left.

About one and a half kilometers after its origin, it flows through an elongated, approximately 0.3 hectare forest pond. Immediately afterwards the first of its three tributaries flows from this side, all between 0.7 km and 1.0 km long and heights of 510  m above sea level. NN begin their course, the stream from the deer fountain . This rises near the tunnel portal and like the others on the lower slope of the 580  m above sea level. NN high Hornberg , whose ridge line runs roughly parallel to the Eschenbach. After the brook has passed through a smaller pond, Nestlersbach and Hornbach flow one after the other .

Three hundred meters before the end of the run, the forest opens into a small meadow near the lonely Jagstzell residential area Keuerstadt , just before which it comes under the Nikolauskapelle on the low spur of the mouth with the Brandbach coming from the north at about 461  m above sea level. NN merges into the Fischbach , which initially continues in the direction of the Eschenbach.

The 2.9 km long Eschenbach flows about 36 meters below its origin and has a mean bed gradient of about 12 ‰.

Catchment area

The catchment area covers 3.5 km² and lies entirely in the Virngrund forest landscape ; In terms of natural space, the vast majority of the northern and northwestern part is part of the Ellwanger Mountains sub-area of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains , where to the right of the stream is 523.7  m above sea level. NN in the Rote Letten on a small hill the second highest altitude in the catchment area; a moderately wide border in the southeast of the catchment area belongs to the Pfahlheim-Rattstädter Liasplatten in the neighboring natural area foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb . The highest point of the catchment area is located there on its east-southeast corner on the highest peak of the Hornberg plateau at 580  m above sea level. NN . It is also the largest elevation of the entire Virngrund.

Beyond this most prominent watershed of the catchment area along the Hornberg ridge line in the southeast, the area drains via the main hydrological upper reaches of the Ellenberger Rot to the Röhlinger Sechta . The southern watershed delimits the exclusive catchment area of the Eschenbach receiving water, Fischbach, and that of a first small tributary from this. The long section of the catchment area border following the confluence at Keuerstadt leads east-north-east through the Eschenbuck to the Rote Letten and separates from the drainage area of the right Fischbach upper course Brandbach . In the north, the area briefly touches, which drains the Weißenbach running to Rechenberger Rot . The again quite long eastern watershed runs to the Gerbach , whose drainage flows into the Danube via Rotach and Wörnitz . This watershed, which can hardly be seen in the terrain, is therefore the most important from a hydrographic point of view, since it is part of the European main watershed between the Danube on the other side and the Rhine on this side, in which all other named competitors drain over the Jagst .

Except for a western wedge of the Flurinsel around Georgenstadt and the even smaller stream floodplain clearing near Keuerstadt, the area is completely and predominantly forested with softwood. There are no settlement sites in it. By far the largest part belongs to the municipality of Ellenberg , a smaller one on the slope of the Hornberg down to the left bank of the stream to the Rindelbach district marking of Ellwangen , a tiny gusset at the confluence with the Brandbach near Keuerstadt to the municipality of Jagstzell .

A large part of the catchment area is in water protection areas. Except for the federal motorway 7 , which runs through its eastern part, all other traffic routes are forest management routes.

Source of the Eschenbach at about 497  m above sea level. NN about 2.1 km west of Ellenberg - Breitenbach on a forest path in Schlägle, a little east of the A 7 . The stream flows consistently about southwest.

  • RiverIcon-SmallLake.svgFlows through at about 480  m above sea level. NN between the Reute channels on the left and Hirschbuck on the right a reservoir, 0.3 ha.
  • (Bach vom Hirschbrunnen ), from the left and east-southeast to about 478  m above sea level. NN immediately after the previous one, 0.7 km and about 0.4 km². Arises at about 505  m above sea level. NN on the Hornberg -Nordhang near the north portal of the Virngrund tunnel . The creek is followed by the municipality boundary from Ellenberg on the right to Ellwangen on the left, which then follows the Eschenbach itself from the mouth of the river to the Keuerstadt clearing island.
    • RiverIcon-SmallLake.svgFlows through to something below 500  m above sea level. NN a lake, 0.1 ha.
  • Nestlersbach , from the left and southeast to about 475  m above sea level. NN opposite the Waldgewann Geheuerstattbuck , 0.7 km and about 0.4 km². Arises at about 512  m above sea level. NN on the northwest slope of the Hornberg.
  • Hornbach , from the left and southeast to about 467  m above sea level. NN shortly before the beginning of the Keuerstadter valley direction, 0.9 km and approx. 0.4 km². Arises at about 512  m above sea level. NN on the northwest slope of the Hornberg.

Confluence at about 461  m above sea level. NN with the right Brandbach coming from the north to Fischbach in the small valley direction around the Jagstzeller residential area Keuerstadt . The Eschenbach is 2.9 km long and has a catchment area of 3.5 km².

geology

On the collision slope under the St. Nicholas Chapel in the closely adjacent Brandbachtal shortly before the confluence with the Eschenbach there is a collision slope in the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein formation ); the geological layers in the catchment area are therefore in the higher Middle Keuper and Upper Keuper , with the exception of the Hornberg plateau, which already belongs to the Black Jura . The Eschenbach is - like its receiving water at the beginning, Fischbach - a small step-edge river .

Protected area

The lowest pass in the open meadow just before Keuerstadt located in the small conservation area Keuerstadt and the surrounding area .
