Essa Mohamed Gharib al-Zankawi (born October 17, 1992 ) is a Kuwaiti discus thrower who occasionally competes in the shot put .

Athletic career

Essa Mohamed al-Zankawi gained his first international experience at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Bressanone , where he was eliminated from the qualification with 52.11 m. In 2010 he won the Arab Junior Championships in Cairo with 57.30 m in the discus throw and was seventh in the shot put with 15.90 m. He then took part in the Junior Asian Championships in Hanoi and finished fourth with 52.00 m. He qualified for the Junior World Championships in Moncton, Canada , where he was eliminated in the first round with 54.90 m. In November he took part in the Asian Games in Guangzhou for the first time and was eighth there with 54.19 m. In 2011 he won the silver medal at the Arab Championships in al-Ain with 54.96 m and was sixth at the Pan-Arab Games in Doha with 55.89 m. Two years later he finished sixth at the Asian Championships in Pune with 56.96 m. He then reached eighth place at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang with 54.80 m.

In 2014 he again took part in the Asian Games in Incheon and this time finished ninth with a throw of 56.57 m. In 2015 he won the Arab Championships in Manama with 63.22 m and won the silver medal behind the Indian Vikas Gowda at the Asian Championships in Wuhan with 61.57 m . He also qualified for the World Championships in Beijing , where he was eliminated with 58.68 m in qualification . In 2017 he finished sixth at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar with 58.28 m and then won gold at the Arab Championships in Radès with 59.75 m. The following year he won the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta with 59.44 m behind the Iranian Ehsan Hadadi and Mustafa al-Saamah from Iraq.
