The Estadio El Sadar is a football stadium under renovation in the Spanish city of Pamplona , capital of the autonomous community of Navarre . Until the start of the renovation in 2019, the facility provided space for 17,286 spectators. After the renovation, 25,048 places should be available.

history

The El Sadar was opened on 2 September 1967, and then took some 30,000 spectators. The first major renovation took place in 1989 when the new main grandstand was built. In December 2005, the CA Osasuna club signed a sponsorship deal with the Navarre regional government . For six years the stadium was called Reyno de Navarra ( German  Kingdom of Navarra ), based on the regional tourism slogan. In return, the club received € 1.5 million per year. Osasuna was the first Spanish soccer club to change the name of its stadium due to a sponsorship deal. The stadium has been using its old name again since 2012.

On the last matchday of the Primera División 2013/14 , CA Osasuna and Betis Sevilla met in a relegation duel in El Sadar . Oriol Riera scored the 1-0 for Osasuna in the 12th minute . When the goal was celebrated, the fans pushed forward and a fence collapsed behind the goal in the stands. Numerous visitors, including children, fell on top of each other in the stadium interior. Paramedics and also players were quickly on site to provide help. According to the Red Cross, 68 people were injured, mostly with minor wounds. Some had to be taken to hospital with broken bones. The game could be continued after an interruption of 35 minutes. A 2-1 victory could not prevent the club from relegation from Pamplona.

The lawn was renewed in mid-January 2017. The relocation of the new pitch should start on January 10th, but was postponed by the executing company due to a bad weather forecast with rain and snow. The stadium's floodlights did not meet the league's requirements for television broadcasting. The installed headlights were replaced by LED spotlights . For this purpose, scaffolding was installed on the lower edge of the roof.

The club wants to completely rebuild its stadium. On October 24, 2018, the club presented five designs for the modernized home of the CA Osasuna in the auditorium of the Museum of the University of Navarra in Pamplona. The association laid down some requirements for the renovation. The capacity should not fall below the mark of 23,000 places and all places should be covered. The conversion must be possible while the game is running. In addition, the renovation may not cost more than 16 million  euros . After the technical evaluation of the designs, all were considered profitable. The renovation is scheduled to start in 2019. The 13,500 association members were able to ask questions about the proposals on an online platform .

On February 23, 2019, the association's president Luis Sabalza announced that the project proposal Muro Rojo ( German  Red Wall ) by OFS Architects and VDR had won the vote with a large majority of 45 percent. Before that, the electorate asked whether El Sadar should be completely or only partially rebuilt. 90.37 percent voted for a complete redesign. The renovation is to be implemented by 2020 and capacity increased. The back straight and the two rear stands of the main grandstand are leveled in height by an upper tier and covered all around. The construction costs should remain in the range of 16 million euros. Initially, CA Osasuna will take out a loan of EUR 23 million to finance the renovation and to pay off some debts. Implementation of the project could start as early as next week. The stadium will also be used for other events outside of match days.

Result of the vote

Of the total of 11,118 members entitled to vote, 8,409 (75.6 percent) took part in the vote.

  • Muro Rojo - 3,820 votes
  • Nuevo Sadar - 1,718 votes
  • Sadar Berria - 1,309 votes
  • Rojo-Azul - 1,022 votes
  • Fortaleza Rojilla - 287 votes

The renovation work began in October 2019. The roof over the main stand was originally intended to be retained, but has to be replaced due to major damage. For this reason, the design was slightly adapted. The construction costs, together with an additional 1,900 m² of commercial space in the stadium, should increase slightly by EUR 1.8 million to EUR 17.8 million. The old seats will be donated to other stadiums. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , construction activities initially stalled . In the absence of the game, you made faster progress and made up time. The CA Osasuna hopes for the completion of the buildings in October 2020.
