features

Branches with typical cork warts
Winter buds

The warty spindle bush grows as a shrub and reaches heights of up to 2.5 m. Characteristic and eponymous are the corky warts on woody branches. While the warts are irregularly distributed on young twigs, the older twigs have linear arrangements. Even older branches or trunks can also have a smooth, gray bark.

Flower and buds
The seed set can be seen well against the light.

The opposite leaves are lanceolate to elliptical and extremely thin. The leaf margin is finely serrated. The foliage has a bright red autumn color , just like that of the eccentric .

The flowering period extends from May to June. The four-fold, inconspicuous flowers have a maximum diameter of 10 mm and have an unpleasant smell of wet animal fur. The four petals are pale green in color and very dense and finely dotted with reddish brown.

The fruits are similar to those of the Pfaffenhütchen. They are pink-colored, quadruple capsule fruits in which the white seeds are partially covered by a thin seed coat ( aril ) . The seeds have a green embryo and hang out on elongated stems from the open capsule fruit.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

Distribution and location

The warty spindle bush occurs in Europe , with a predominant occurrence in Central and Eastern Europe . In the north it occurs to southern Scandinavia, in the south to the Crimea and the Caucasus . The shrub grows in the undergrowth of deciduous or mixed forests on soils that are not too wet and loves lime.

In Austria the species occurs in the federal states of Burgenland , Vienna , Lower Austria and Carinthia in the colline to submontane altitude range. The species is common in the Pannonian region , otherwise scattered, in the Bohemian Massif it is considered endangered.
