The Century 21 Exposition was a world exposition held in Seattle from April 21 to October 21, 1962 and attended by 6.6 million people. The exhibition area was 29.9 hectares and 24 countries were represented. Unlike many other world expositions, the Seattle Expo was able to generate a profit.
history
The world exhibition was dominated by the space race , which also inspired many Americans back then. While the Soviet Union presented the Sputnik satellite, the USA showed the Friendship 7 space capsule at the exhibition . American companies such as B. Ford Motor Company or Boeing discussed space travel.
The 184-meter-high observation tower Space Needle , which has become a symbol of the city, also addressed space travel in terms of appearance and name . Another attraction was the Bubbleator, a plexiglass elevator that whisked visitors away into the “world of the future”.
Since the exhibition grounds were about two kilometers from the city center, a monorail was built to bridge the distance . The train, which operates today as the Seattle Center Monorail , is also one of the legacies of the World's Fair.
