Ezio Bosso (born September 13, 1971 in Turin - † May 15, 2020 in Bologna ) was an Italian pianist , double bass player , conductor and composer .

Life

Ezio Bosso grew up in the working-class district of San Donato on the northwestern outskirts of Turin, which was characterized by social tensions in the 1970s. The Bosso family was one of the few with Piedmontese roots in the workers' settlement, which was mostly inhabited by southern Italian emigrants .

Even as a child, he said he was not yet four years old, he was enthusiastic about musical instruments. It was initially his older brother and parents who encouraged his interest in music.

He became aware of John Cage at the age of eleven when he heard Bosso play at a rehearsal at the Turin Conservatory and protected him from the loud criticism of his teacher. Although he temporarily interrupted his further visit to the Conservatory due to the harassment of his teacher, John Cage's recognition encouraged him to complete the Conservatory.

At the age of 14 he became the bass player in the band “Statuto”. He performed as a double bass player and conductor with orchestras such as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at the age of 16.

Bosso later gave up pop music to become an orchestral conductor and classical composer and studied composition and conducting at the Vienna Music Academy . He has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles BOZAR in Brussels, the Teatro Regio di Torino as well as with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.

He composed his first film music in 1989 and later music for Tavarelli's “Un amore” and Gabriele Salvatore'sIo non ho paura ” (I'm not afraid). He worked with James Thiérrée on theater projects. With Rafael Bonachela he has worked with dance ensembles such as BalletBoyz , the Scottish Dance Theater , the Sydney Dance Company , the San Francisco Ballet , the Dance Theater of Harlem and the Bonachela Dance Company .

Bosso's other compositions include four operas, four symphonies, concerts and various quartets, piano trios and sonatas, where he worked both as a composer and as a conductor with soloists such as Mario Brunello and Sergei Krylow .

As a result of the removal of a brain tumor in 2011, he was diagnosed with an incurable degenerative disease of the motor nervous system . With a lot of effort he managed to make a comeback despite the disabilities he had encountered - among other things he needed a walking aid from now on.

In 2015, his album “The 12th Room” landed at number three on the iTunes charts, between Adele and Coldplay .

In September 2019 he announced that due to his illness he could no longer play the piano by himself because he could no longer control the movements of two fingers and he wanted to concentrate on conducting from now on.

He died on May 15, 2020 of the consequences of his neurodegenerative disease .
