FEI Nations Cup 2018 (dressage riding)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2018 in dressage (2018 FEI Dressage Nations Cup) was the sixth season of the Nations Cup for dressage riders .

Course of the tournament series

Compared to the previous year, the calendar showed no change. Seven competition tournaments were held at unchanged venues.

The tournaments were advertised as CDIOs at 3 *, 4 * or 5 * level. The tendering mode became more firmly established; as in the previous year, the organizers had three different modes to choose from for the Nations Cup:

  • The result of the Grand Prix de Dressage (three or four riders per team) was added to the results from the Grand Prix Spécial (two riders per team) and Grand Prix Freestyle (one or two riders per team),
  • The former Olympic team competition mode: Grand Prix de Dressage and Grand Prix Spécial counted for the Nations Cup or
  • Different tender (only outside Europe, approval by the FEI required)

The Nations Cup tournaments took place from March 27 to July 29, 2018. Points were awarded on the basis of placement, staggered according to the category of the tournament (the winning team received 5 * 15 points for a CDIO, 10 points for a CDIO 3 *).

New in the 2018 season was the mode of determining the team result at the individual Nations Cups: The ranking of the rider decided the number of points: One point for first place, two for second, etc. Thus, the team with the The Nations Cup with the highest result, but the one with the lowest.

The stages

United States

The 2018 season also started with the US Nations Cup, the only non-European stage of the Nations Cup. The Nations Cup tournament, which also hosted a Nations Cup for U25 dressage riders (CDIOU25), took place from March 27 to 31, 2018. It was part of the Global Dressage Festival dressage series, which lasted several weeks and was held in Wellington , Florida.

At the Wellington Nations Cup, special regulations are always used: the teams not only competed at Grand Prix level. Instead came the riders in the Grand Prix de Dressage either and in the Grand Prix Spécial or in the Prix St. Georges and the Intermediaire I at. In order to take into account the difference in difficulty, the results of the Grand Prix Tour were increased by a factor of 1.5 percent per rider.

After only three teams were at the start in 2017 and the stage therefore did not count for the Nations Cup overall ranking (four nations are required for this), the number of participants increased again in 2018. Four teams were at the start, but none from a Central or South American nation. The hosts won the victory safely.

France

A good two months after the Wellington Nations Cup, the first European Nations Cup for dressage riders was due: The French Nations Cup tournament, which was held again in Compiègne , took place from May 17 to 20, 2018. The tournament was advertised as CDIO 5 *.

The Scandinavian dominance in Compiègne was already evident in the Grand Prix: six of the best seven results came from riders from Sweden and Denmark. The victory went with a clear lead to Cathrine Dufour with Cassidy (79.696%). Juliette Ramel and Patrik Kittel followed in second and third with over 74 percent each. With only ten points from the individual placement, Sweden was clearly in the lead in the Nations Cup.

First on Sunday was the Grand Prix Spécial, which Juliette Ramel and Buriel (75.532%) won ahead of her older sister Antonia Ramel and Brother de Jeu (72.596%). In the freestyle that followed, Cathrine Dufour achieved 84.250%, Patrik Kittel came in second with Well Done de la Roche (78.950%).

Sweden won the Nations Cup final, with no individual result worse than fifth place. Denmark started with only three riders, so there was no one deleted result. Cathrine Dufour's victories could not compensate for Ulrik Moelgaard's rear placement, but it was enough to make it to second place.

Denmark

The Nations Cup stopped in Denmark for the third time, and for the second time in a row in Uggerhalne in Aalborg Municipality . On the grounds of the Uggerhalne Sportsride Club, where the Danish dressage rider Andreas Helgstrand is also based, the Danish Nations Cup tournament in dressage and show jumping was held from May 23 to 27, 2018. The dressage tests were advertised as CDIO 4 *.

Three Scandinavian teams and a team from the Netherlands competed in the Nations Cup. The dominant rider in the Grand Prix was Daniel Bachmann Andersen, who won with the Oldenburg stallion Zepter with 76.217%. Emmelie Scholtens from the Netherlands came in second (73.870%), followed by all four Swedish team riders.

All riders started as the second test in the Grand Prix Spécial. Here the field was better mixed. With the exception of Emma Kanerva (7th place), the Finns were far behind in this test and therefore also finished the Nations Cup in last place. Despite the slightly poorer performance in the Grand Prix Spécial, the overall victory went to the Swedes with a three percent advantage. In the individual, Daniel Bachmann Andersen and Zepter won again in the special, almost three percent behind Therese Nilshagen, who placed second. The winner of Compiègne, Cathrine Dufour, took part in front of a home crowd with her young horse, the 8-year-old dark chestnut gelding Bohemian .

Netherlands

From June 21st to 24th, 2018 the Nations Cup of the Netherlands in dressage and show jumping was held. The venue was Rotterdam , the Nations Cup competitions for dressage riders were advertised as CDIO 5 *.

Edward Gal won the Grand Prix de Dressage with Zonik (76.957%). Therese Nilshagen (second place) and Patrik Kittel (third place) also achieved results above 75 percent. After this test, the Netherlands were only two points ahead of Sweden in the Nations Cup.

The Grand Prix Spécial and Grand Prix Freestyle were each divided into two tests: The riders from the fifth to seventh placed nations competed in a B final. The riders of the first to fourth placed nations, however, each started in an A final. The best result in the Grand Prix Spécial came from Therese Nilshagen and Dante Weltino OLD (74.149%), behind her in the A-final Hans Peter Minderhoud and his black Dream Boy (73.830%) placed. In the freestyle, Edward Gal's ride was rated just over 80 percent. Patrik Kittel, Steffen Peters and Kasey Perry-Glass were close together with more than 77 percent in places two to four.

The victory in the Nations Cup went to the Netherlands, but the Swedes were even able to come closer to one point.

Sweden

In the 2018 season, too, the last three Nations Cup tournaments followed on three consecutive weekends. The beginning of this was the Falsterbo Horse Show, which took place from July 12th to 15th, 2018 in Skanör med Falsterbo . The Swedish Nations Cup tournament in dressage was advertised as CDIO 5 *.

In the Grand Prix, which was organized on July 14th, Patrik Kittel secured victory with almost two percent advantage (75.543%). In second place came the strongest Russian couple in dressage at the time, Inessa Merkulowa and her 14-year-old Trakehner Mister X (73.717%). After this first test, Sweden was with a clear lead at the top of the Nations Cup standings.

On the morning of the following day, the first thing to do was the Grand Prix Freestyle. In this test Patrik Kittel and his Swedish mare Deja again won ahead of Inessa Merkulowa. The lead was even more than five percent (81.975% to 76.875%). Kathleen Keller placed directly behind with her Oldenburg gelding San Royal (76.280%). In the subsequent Grand Prix Spécial, Keller's team-mates Jan-Dirk Giesselmann and Frederic Wandres took top positions (first place with 72.660% and third place with 71.298%).

With these strong performances in Freestyle and Special, the German team was able to work its way closer to the Swedes. Nevertheless, Sweden clearly won by nine points. The other three teams followed behind on the other places.

Germany

On the weekend after Falsterbo, the German Nations Cup of Dressage took place in Aachen . The CDIO 5 * was carried out during the second week of the CHIO Aachen from July 17th to 22nd, 2018. For the Nations Cup, the second (classic) Nations Cup mode from Grand Prix and Grand Prix Spécial was chosen. The teams could bring up to four horse-rider pairs to the start. The venue for both tests was the Deutsche Bank Stadium .

The Grand Prix was held on Thursday (July 19). The victory went to Laura Graves, who with her gelding Verdades was the only one to achieve a result over 80 percent. The best Danish couple, Cathrine Dufour and her 15-year-old Cassidy , came in second with 78.494%, ahead of Helen Langehanenberg with the Hanoverian stallion Damsey FRH . For Langehanenberg this was a comeback ride, four weeks after the birth of their daughter. Isabell Werth and her bay gelding Emilio did not find each other in the Grand Prix. With 17th place they were the result of the German team's elimination. This had to be content with second place in the interim ranking of the nations ranking. The United States came out on top with places one, five and ninth and was more than two percent in the lead.

The Grand Prix Spécial took place two days later. Here the decision about the victory was much closer: Kasey Perry-Glass and her Brauner Dublet came in third place with 78.787%. Helen Langehanenberg received only 0.234% more. Another 0.107% more and thus the victory went than Isabell Werth and Emilio , who found their way back to their usual form that day. The exam went unhappy for Laura Graves, who had won the Grand Prix Spécial a year earlier. Her horse Verdades was frightened in front of a television camera, tensed up as a result and only came in eleventh.

Due to the very good results of the German riders, the situation in the Nations Cup ranking also changed. With the exception of Kasey Perry-Glass, the Americans got results of less than 75 percent. Germany was seven percent better than the US-Americans in the Grand Prix Spécial and thus also secured the Nations Cup victory. The Danish team came in third, 20 percent behind in first place.

United Kingdom

The season finale was Dressage at Hickstead , the British dressage Nations Cup tournament. Together with the Royal International Horse Show of Show Jumping, the tournament took place from July 26th to 29th, 2018 in Hickstead . The tournament was advertised as CDIO 3 *.

The national ranking was made up of the placements in the Grand Prix (three or four riders per team), the Grand Prix Spécial (two team riders each) and the Grand Prix Freestyle. One or two weeks after the top-class Nations Cup tournaments in Aachen and Falsterbo, Hickstead could not have such a high performance density.

As in the previous year, the Frenchman Pierre Volla was the only rider to achieve a result of over 72 percent in the Grand Prix. France lost 17 points in the Grand Prix, the same applied to Great Britain. Four nations were at the start, Portugal and Sweden followed in third and fourth place with 22 and 23 points respectively.

In the Grand Prix Spécial the victory went to Vasco Mira Godinho with a result of 71.511%. In the freestyle, Pierre Volla won with the 12-year-old chestnut mare Badinda Altena (76.325%). This gave him a lead of almost two percent over the runner-up Hayley Watson-Greaves. She rode the British Hanoverian black gelding Rubins Nite (74.575%).

France was able to set itself apart from Great Britain in the following two tests and won the Nations Cup. The best result in the addition of the Grand Prix Spécial and Grand Prix Freestyle came from Portugal at its only participation in the Nations Cup in 2018. The Portuguese managed to finish the Nations Cup tied with Great Britain. In the event of a tie, the Nations Cup rules stipulated that the team with the better result would place better in the Grand Prix. Thus the hosts were able to keep their second place.

Overall rating

In the 2018 season, a maximum of the four highest rating points per nation were included in the overall ranking. Two nations were affected by this regulation, no nation took part in all seven Nations Cups. The number of nations that competed in at least one Nations Cup rose significantly from 11 to 15. Sweden managed to defend the overall victory of the previous year.
