The Zurich University of Applied Sciences ( UAS Zurich ) has approximately 19,500 students, the largest of the nine Swiss universities . After the University of Zurich and before the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland , it is the second largest university in Switzerland. It consists of four sub-schools:
- HWZ - Zurich School of Economics
- PHZH - Zurich University of Education
- ZHAW - Zurich University of Applied Sciences
- ZHdK - Zurich University of the Arts
The ZHAW, the ZHdK and the PHZH are state-owned, the HWZ has a private sponsorship.

Predecessor institutions of the ZFH partial schools
Originally, the following higher technical schools were to be given the status of a technical college and integrated into the ZFH:
- Technikum Winterthur Engineering School TWI
- Zurich Higher Business and Administration School HWV Winterthur
- School for Design Zurich
- Zurich Conservatory
- Winterthur Conservatory
- Swiss Vocational Ballet School
- Jazz school
- Acting Academy Zurich
- School for Social Work Zurich SSAZ
- Higher technical school for socio-cultural animation
- Institute (Seminar) for Applied Psychology Zurich IAP
- Interpreting School Zurich DOZ
- Curative Education Seminar Zurich
- Center for Management Training Zurich
- Engineering School Wädenswil ISW
- Engineering School Zurich (evening technical center)
- Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Abend-HWV)
Many of these schools had to merge with other schools in order to meet the requirements for university of applied sciences status (number of students and courses).
1998-2007
The ZFH was founded in 1998. Until 2007 it consisted of the following 8 or 9 sub-schools:
- HMT - University of Music and Theater
- HGKZ - Zurich University of Art and Design
- HSSAZ - University for Social Work Zurich
- HAP - University of Applied Psychology
- HSZ - University of Applied Sciences for Technology, Business and Administration Zurich, with the following fields of study:
- Technology (HSZ-T), later Zurich University of Technology (HSZ-T)
- Business and Administration (HSZ-WV), later Zurich University of Economics (HWZ)
- HSW - University of Wädenswil
- PHZH - Zurich University of Education
- ZHW - Zurich University of Applied Sciences Winterthur
Development since 2007
Due to the new University of Applied Sciences Act, two new state universities were founded in 2007:
- ZHdK - Zurich University of the Arts (merger of HGKZ and HMT)
- ZHAW - Zurich University of Applied Sciences (merger of ZHW, HSW, HAP and HSSAZ)
Between 2007 and 2011, the ZFH consisted of the state universities ZHAW, ZHdK and PHZH as well as the private universities HSZ-T and HWZ.
On January 1, 2012, the HSZ-T was cantonalized and integrated into the ZHAW.
