The village of Falkenhain was first mentioned in 1325 as "Falkenhayn". In 1544, the Falkenhain inheritance courts, together with the towns of Rößgen and Kockisch, were handed over to the Mittweida council. From 1551 the manor Ringethal is documented as the landlord of the place. Falkenhain thus belonged together with the neighboring towns of Ringethal and Hermsdorf to the lordship of Ringethal , which represented an exclave belonging to the Freiberg district office , which was largely surrounded by the offices of Rochlitz and Nossen .

In 1832, the three places of the Ringethal rule were separated from the Freiberg district office and placed under the Frankenberg-Sachsenburg office. The offices were dissolved during the administrative reforms carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony in the 19th century . As a result, Falkenhain came under the administration of the Mittweida court office in 1856 and under the newly established Rochlitz administration in 1875 .

As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Falkenhain was incorporated into Ringethal on January 1, 1952 and incorporated into the Hainichen district in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Hainichen from 1990 onwards . With the administrative reform that took place in 1994, Ringethal and Falkenhain were incorporated into the town of Mittweida and allocated to the newly formed Mittweida district. Due to the main statute of the city of Mittweida from 1994, the current districts of Ringethal and Falkenhain received a joint local constitution and a joint local council. Since 2008, the city of Mittweida and its districts have been part of the newly formed Central Saxony district.

Economy and Transport

The once agricultural structure in the Falkenhain district is now only fragmentary. There is only one rural business with cattle breeding and dairy farming in the village. The corridors of the other farmsteads are leased, mostly to the Agrargenossenschaft eG. The existing building fabric is used for residential purposes.

Until the 19th century the Falkenhain farmers had to use the fords of the Zschopau near Mittweida on their way to the market in Mittweida. Passenger traffic took place via the Ringethaler mill ferry. It was only with the construction of the bridge from Ringethal to Weißthal in 1861 that the route into the city became easier.

Attractions

  • Kriebstein dam : between 1927 and 1929, the Kriebstein dam was built north of the town by damming the Zschopau. The shore area north of Falkenhain is called "Falkenhainer Bucht". In this area there is a landing stage for boats, from which there is the possibility of motorboat trips to Kriebstein or Lauenhain during the season. Between 1930 and 1961 there was a ferry to Tanneberg. On the banks of the Zschopau, bungalows, boat sheds, a youth hostel, a beach inn and an outdoor pool were built.
