  • On a hill above Wiltz there is a statue of the  Virgin of Fátima  in whose honor  a procession with over 20,000 participants takes place every year on  Ascension Day , which is particularly popular with the Portuguese population of Luxembourg. The pilgrimage has become a folk festival in which a large part of the Portuguese population takes part. Many families arrive the day before and camp and barbecue on the access roads to Wiltz. The idea for the procession of the Blessed Virgin of Fátima came about during the siege of the city during the Battle of the  Bulge , when several people sought shelter in the basement of their house from the heavy bombing. They swore that if they survived the night, they would initiate a procession in honor of the Virgin.
