Federico Hermanin (completely Federico Hermanin von Reichenfeld ; September 16, 1868 in Bari , † June 29, 1953 in Rome ) was an Italian art historian .

Live and act

Federico Hermanin, son of Ferdinando Leopoldo Hermanin (1835–1907) and his wife Camilla, née Marstaller (1849–1923), grew up in his native Bari. The father, wing adjutant of King Umberto I and like his wife of Austrian-German origin, had settled in the Apulian port city in the middle of a wealthy Austro-German Protestant community.

Federico Hermanin went to Rome and studied at La Sapienza University . He completed his philology studies with Ernesto Monaci in 1895. Hermanin stayed in Rome all his life and from 1896 turned to Adolfo Venturi to study art history. Venturi founded the Gabinetto nazionale delle stampe in Palazzo Corsini in 1895 . Hermanin became deputy inspector in 1898 and director of this graphic collection in 1908 . From 1901 he taught art history at La Sapienza University .

During restoration work in the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere , Hermanin discovered the fresco The Last Judgment by Pietro Cavallini - an occasion for further research on the artist's work in Naples , Assisi and Florence .

In 1904 Hermanin took part in a publication about the paintings in the monastery of Santa Scolastica in Subiaco . In the same year he became director of the Galleria mazionale d'arte antica in the Palazzo Barberini and the Palazzo Corsini. Over the decades - until 1933 - he took care of the purchase of pictures for the gallery in coordination with Roberto Longhi . Some of his priorities in this regard were views of Rome, the graphic work of Giovanni Fattori and caricatures by Pier Leone Ghezzi .

In 1923, Hermanin founded the magazine Roma . He wrote about Giovanni Battista Piranesi , Ettore Roesler Franz , about artists of the XXV della campagna romana group and wrote a book about the history of copper engraving .

From 1913 to 1938 he was in charge of the galleries and museums in Lazio and Abruzzo .

Hermanin's activities until 1938 - the year he retired - were extremely diverse. For example, after the Avezzano earthquake in 1915, he advocated the best possible preservation of the art treasures affected. Or he temporarily took over the management of the Galleria Borghese in 1908 . And in 1910 he took over the supervision of the galleries and museums in Tuscany for a year . The latter action was mainly about the supervision of painting restorations in the Uffizi . At the same time he directed three other restorations - one in New York and two in Tivoli in 1908 and 1921 . From 1916 he directed the restoration of the Palazzo Venezia and opened there in 1921 - supported by Benedetto Croce - several rooms for an exhibition with medieval and Renaissance works of art. A volume on the Palazzo, begun in 1936, could not be completed before the war .

He is buried on the Cimitero acattolico in Rome.
