history

Today's Feldbergplatz was given the name of the Großer Feldberg on April 23, 1890; during the Nazi era , the square was named Ludendorffplatz after Erich Ludendorff in 1940 . With the end of the Second World War and the German Reich , Feldbergplatz was given its original name again in 1945.

Initially, the square was the extension of the south-west facing traffic routes Feldbergstrasse and Josefstrasse. The development of the square began in 1880, when the then bank area began to be built on. In 1887 the square was finally completed after the development of the Mainz Neustadt. Trees, bushes and bushes were planted in these construction measures. In the middle was a large meadow. At the northeastern end of the Rhine, the Feldbergtor and stood caponier V .

In the next few years, single-family houses , apartment blocks and shops were built around Feldbergplatz . In addition, a magnificent villa was built on the banks of the Rhine and a large multi-storey school building north-east of Rheinallee, which now also houses a kindergarten. For this purpose, a number of public buildings were erected in the monument zone, for example the chemical investigation office at Zollhafen 12. A midwifery school was also built on Feldbergplatz .

Today there are numerous benches, play equipment for children, a playground and table tennis facilities on Feldbergplatz . There is also a public bookcase southeast of the square . Since 1977, the green bridge has been used to access the Rheinallee .

architecture

The monument zone consists of Feldbergplatz and adjacent buildings. These buildings are located at Am Zollhafen 3, 5, 10, Feldbergplatz 4, 4a, 7, Frauenlobstraße 95, 97, Hafenstraße 4, 6, 15/17 and 17 and Taunusstraße 23, 33 and 37/39 . The buildings at Zollhafen 12, Frauenlobstraße 93 / 93a and Hafenstraße 2, 16, 19 and 23 on the edge of the monument zone help shape the monument zone.

All buildings were built after the construction of the customs and inland port on the Rhine. The first to be built were the houses near the Rhine at Am Zollhafen 8 and Frauenlobstraße 95/97. Then the rest of the banks of the Rhine and Frauenlobstraße were built. At the beginning of the 20th century, construction began around Feldbergplatz and in Hafenstrasse.

Significant structures

Around 1900 the "Feldberg School" was built at Feldbergplatz 4 on behalf of the municipal building department . A primary school was set up in the rooms . The property is flanked by Hafenstrasse, Rheinallee and Feldbergplatz. The building has four floors, the ground floor is a massive basement . Due to the destruction of the top floor, the top floor and the roof had to be replaced. The main facade of the building faces Feldbergplatz. On it, the four windows of the classrooms are arranged in uniform groups. These are decorated with risalits and gables . The decorations are in the style of the Renaissance . In the past two large portals were built for boys and girls . For this purpose, consoles with male and female heads were attached above the portals . In addition, a brick gym was built. It has a stepped gable as an ornament .

Five years later, according to plans by the architect and client P. Scheuren, a large building was built at Feldbergplatz 4a with a flank facing Hafenstrasse. It had five floors and a large basement . There were offices in it. Sandstone was used as a building material, some of which was plastered . Numerous decorations in the Art Nouveau style were added. The house also has a large bay window , a few gables and decorated balconies .

Around 1900, a two-story residential building was built at today's address at Feldbergplatz 7. It has a mansard roof . After air raids in World War II , the building was given three more floors as part of renovation measures in 1959. A special feature is the magnificent entrance door to the house: it is decorated with late Gothic , Art Nouveau and Renaissance decorations . The original door leaf and the skylight above the door with many decorations are present. In addition, the old inscription plaque and the house number with volute decorations can still be found today. There are also cellar windows with round arches and an elaborately designed windowsill cornice . Between the door, a cellar window and the adjacent window there is also a bird of prey as a relief with a key.

On the northeast side of the square is located directly on the Rhine, the caponier V. It was built in 1887 and is in size and style, an image of that caponier on the Fischtorplatz . It was part of the Mainzer Rhein Kehl wall and left through the wall washers and loopholes passages both for pedestrians as well as for traffic. The caponier has a square floor plan and a stair tower . Both the stair tower and the caponier are equipped with battlements .
