Habitus in the habitat

The rock cinquefoil is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 60 centimeters. The basal leaves of the rock cinquefoil are unpaired pinnate with two to four pairs of plumage. The terminal leaflets are about 1.5 to 5 centimeters long, the others are smaller, broadly ovate and deep and sometimes double-serrated.

The inflorescence shaft is erect, steeply branched at the top and ends in a loose, poor to rich-flowered, sometimes almost shawn-gold inflorescence . The flower stalk is long. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical and five-fold. The five sepals are ovate, pointed, about 7 millimeters long and significantly larger than the lanceolate outer sepals . The five free white petals are almost circular with a length of 8 to 12 millimeters.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence and endangerment

The rock cinquefoil is widespread from Western Europe through southern Central Europe , in Southern Europe , Southeast Europe to Eastern Europe from Spain in the west to the Crimea and the Caucasus in the east. It is also found in north-western Africa, Anatolia and northern Iran . In the north there is a fragmented area up to Scotland , southern Sweden , southern Finland and Poland . This species is assigned to the sub-Mediterranean floral element . In Austria it occurs sparsely or rarely in the southern part and is endangered, in Switzerland it is generally found sparsely.

The rock cinquefoil is very rare in Central Europe in the Eifel, the Palatinate, the Lahn valley and the Steigerwald; it occurs sporadically on the valley slopes of the Main , Neckar , Lech and High Rhine as well as in western and northern Switzerland , in Upper and Lower Austria ; it is rare in the Central and Southern Alps .

The rock cinquefoil is rarely found in the south-western region of Germany . Outside of this area it is very rarely found. It is listed in the 1996 Red List of Endangered Plant Species in Germany in “Category 3+” = “Endangered”.

Potentilla rupestris grows mainly in light oak and pine forests, in semi-arid lawns and on the edges of forests and bushes. Despite its common name , the rock cinquefoil never appears on rocks, but prefers sandy to loamy soil. In Central Europe it populates bushes and light dry forests, but it can also be found in rock ledges and dry grass . In Central Europe it thrives mainly in plant communities of the Geranion sanguinei association, but also occurs in associations of the Mesobromion association or the order Sedo-Scleranthetalia.

The rock cinquefoil grows best on stony loam soil with little lime .
