Femme Schmidt or often just Schmidt (born February 14, 1990 in Koblenz ; bourgeois Elisa Schmidt ) is a German singer-songwriter whose style is somewhere between pop music and jazz .
Life
Elisa Schmidt grew up as the daughter of an entrepreneur with her older brother in Koblenz. As a child, she developed the firm desire to become a musician and from then on used every opportunity to be on stage, for example in the youth theater or in the school choir. At the age of 16 she went to the music international Hurtwood House in south London, where she began writing English-language songs. At the age of 17 she went to the United States for a year. Then she did her Abitur in Munich.
Schmidt lives in Berlin and London.

In June 2010 Schmidt signed a contract with the major label Warner Music . In autumn 2010 she met the London music producer and songwriter Guy Chambers through their contact . Originally a collaboration was only planned for one song. In the following months, however, she wrote all the other songs for her debut album Femme Schmidt together with Chambers . For Schmidt, Chambers also revised his decision made after Robbie Williams ' album Escapology to no longer be available as a producer of complete album productions.
During the album production in London, Schmidt played live in Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club , in Guy Chambers ' series of events Orgasmatron - 21st Century Cabaret and toured with Ronnie Scott's house band. The club's musical director, James Pearson, can also be heard as the pianist on their debut album.
In autumn 2011 Schmidt released her EP Above Sin City, which contains not only her own songs but also a cover version of The Velvet Undergrounds Venus in Furs . For the title song of the EP, Sin City, she initiated a film award of the same name, in which 85 filmmakers from 27 countries took part; the jurors included Paul Verhoeven and Volker Schlöndorff . In the same period Schmidt toured in the opening act of Melanie C . Their debut album was finally released on May 18, 2012.
Schmidt received international attention beyond Germany and Great Britain. In April and May 2012 she played four concerts in Los Angeles as part of Musexpo 2012 , including a reception by Lady Gaga's manager Troy Carter. At the invitation of Bavaria Film , she performed at the Cannes Film Festival . After all, she was opening act for the Elton John Arena Tour in Australia in November 2012 . In this context, she also appeared on the Australian television show The Morning Show on Channel 7 and on various Australian radio stations. Also in November 2012, Schmidt appeared in the opening act for Lionel Richie at the sold out Le Zenith in Paris.
Schmidt became better known through the Cologne Tatort Scheinwelten, broadcast on New Year's Day 2013 , in which her song with Robin Grubert , Heart Shaped Gun, was used as the theme music. It then also made it into the German single charts.
On January 18, 2013, Schmidt appeared on the Michalsky Stylenite of Berlin fashion designer Michael Michalsky . The appearance was broadcast on the Internet via live stream and could be seen on the FAZ.net, Bild.de and Vogue.de websites, among others.
In 2014, Schmidt mainly devoted himself to the songwriting and pre-production of the follow-up album. For several months she traveled continuously in the USA and Scandinavia and worked with other musicians until she finally found the London Kensaltown Studios. There, in collaboration with producers Glen Scott, James Bryan and Martin Terefe, their second, significantly rougher and more energetic album RAW was created, without denying their roots in jazz, blues and gospel.
During the production work, Schmidt was supposed to take part in Bryan Ferry's Germany tour as a special guest in November 2014 , which was canceled on the first day of the show due to Ferry's illness and was then rescheduled in September 2015. The new album was finally released in February 2016.
In September 2016 Femme Schmidt delivered the title song “Shape Of Love” for Karoline Herfurth's directorial debut SMS für Dich , which reached number 1 in the German cinema charts. Another Femme Schmidt song was featured in the movie with "Temple Of Tears". At the invitation of Coldplay , Femme Schmidt toured as a special guest with the band on their Germany Arena tour in June 2017.
Schmidt also writes songs for other artists, for example she co-wrote the title Richest Girl on Ivy Quainoo's debut album Ivy in 2012 .
Music genre
Guy Chambers calls the style created by Schmidt and him “Pop Noir”. She describes her music as a combination of cabaret jazz and modern pop elements. As personal influences she mentions u. a. Marlene Dietrich , Kurt Weill , Billie Holiday and Norah Jones .
Trivia
The stage name Schmidt came about during the production of her debut album in London. She and Guy Chambers were very inspired by Germany in the Roaring Twenties , so at some point Chambers only called her by her typically German last name.
Schmidt describes the number 14 as her lucky number, which is why she has a tattoo with the Roman numeral on her right wrist.
In the German and British tabloids, there was speculation about an affair between Schmidt and the British actor Hugh Grant . However, she herself rejected this and stated that she was only friends with Grant.
