Ferdinand Keller , later Ferdinand von Keller , (born August 5, 1842 in Karlsruhe ; † July 8, 1922 in Baden-Baden ) was a German history painter of historicism and university lecturer .

Life

Ferdinand Keller's father Joseph Keller was a civil engineer and in 1857 was commissioned to build river regulations, bridges and road construction in Brazil . Fifteen-year-old Ferdinand Keller was allowed to accompany him with his brother Franz . During his four-year stay, Keller trained his talent for drawing in the tropical landscape on an autodidactic basis .

After returning from Brazil, Ferdinand Keller began studying at the Karlsruhe Art Academy in 1862 . He studied with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer , the director of the art academy at the time. After Schirmer's death in 1863, Keller continued his studies with Ludwig des Coudres . Dissatisfied with the training at the art academy, he took private lessons in Hans Canon's studio from 1864 . Study trips to Switzerland and France followed in 1866. From 1867 to 1869 Keller lived in Rome, where he made the acquaintance of Anselm Feuerbach ; both had their studios in Rome in the same house.

In 1870 Ferdinand Keller was appointed to teach portrait and history painting at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. In 1873 he was appointed professor and one of his pupils was Carl Geist . From 1880 to 1913 he was director of the art academy. Ferdinand Keller died in Baden-Baden in 1922 at the age of 79.

He celebrated his first great success with the historical painting “Death of Philip II” in 1867. In numerous monumental paintings he glorified historical, dynastic or cultural events in German and Baden history. The five by seven meter painting “The apotheosis of Kaiser Wilhelm I ” was created in the three emperor year 1888. It was acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II a year later and is now on permanent loan from the Berlin National Gallery in the Berlin Museum .

Other works by Keller were the jewelry for the Karlsruhe court theater and for the Dresden court theater . In the rebuilt Dresden house, the painting can be admired again today on the restored theater curtain. The decoration of the König-Karl-Halle in the State Museum Stuttgart inspired the Württemberg king so much that he awarded Keller the personal title of nobility . On behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, Keller painted the "History of Baden". The colossal painting is now in the Baden-Baden State Art Gallery . Numerous other orders were made for public buildings and aristocratic palaces. Numerous books have been illustrated with his etchings.
