Hans Canon (born March 15, 1829 in Vienna ; † September 12, 1885 there ; actually Johann Strašiřipka ) was an Austrian painter .
Life
Canon was born in the Jägerzeile in Vienna (today Praterstrasse 68). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1845 and was a student of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Carl Rahl . In between Canon was an officer in the Austrian army until 1855 before he graduated from the academy. Study trips through Western Europe , Italy and the Orient followed . Canon stayed in Karlsruhe from 1860 to 1869 . He married Katharina Buchhold in 1866. From 1869 to 1874 he lived in Stuttgart and returned to Vienna in 1874. In 1882 he married a second time, Amalie Veranneman van Watervliet. Hans Canon died in 1885 at Rasumofskygasse 27 and was buried in the Matzleinsdorfer Evangelical Cemetery (Group 19, No. 159).

Hans Canon was a history and portrait painter of historicism and the Ringstrasse era and a contemporary of Hans Makart . He was based on the old masters , especially Peter Paul Rubens and Titian . In addition to his oil paintings , Canon also created a number of monumental paintings on public buildings from the Ringstrasse era.
Honors
In 1891 Canongasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after the artist. When this street merged into another street in 1894, a street in Vienna- Währing, also called Canongasse , was dedicated to Canon . In 1905 a bronze statue of Rudolf Weyr was erected in Vienna's city park near Johannesgasse and Kursalon (Canon monument). At the birthplace Praterstraße 68 and at his home Währingerstraße 81-83 are plaques with busts.
In 1948, on the occasion of 80 years of the Wiener Künstlerhaus, a special stamp with his portrait was issued by the Austrian Post based on a design by Ernst Schrom .
