Fernando Legal SDB (born December 17, 1931 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of São Miguel Paulista .

Life

He made his first profession on January 31, 1950 in the religious community of the Salesians of Don Bosco . After he worked in Lorena philosophy from 1953 to 1955 , and from 1956 to 1959 at the Theological Institute of Pius XI. Having studied theology in São Paulo, he was ordained a priest on December 8, 1959 in São Paulo . This was followed by further studies in moral theology and sociology , as well as a licentiate in theology at the theological faculty in São Paulo. From 1963 to 1964 he did his doctorate in Rome at the Pontifical University of the Salesians and obtained a diploma in sociology from the Centro Internazionale per la Formazione sociologica del Clero (CISIC).

From 1965 to 1967 he was the director of studies and from 1968 to 1970 director of the Theological Institute of Pius XI. in São Paulo. He was Provincial Councilor from 1968 to 1976, Provincial Delegate for Pastoral Affairs from 1971 to 1976, Vicar Provincial from 1972 to 1976 and Provincial of the Province of São Paulo from 1976 to 1980 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Itapeva on March 28, 1980 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, Archbishop Carmine Rocco , donated him episcopal ordination on May 31 of the same year in São Paulo. Co-consecrators were Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida SJ , auxiliary bishop in São Paulo , and Ladislau Paz SDB, former bishop of Corumbá . His coat of arms is "Cum Matre Jesu".

On April 25, 1985, he was appointed Bishop of Limeira . On March 15, 1989 he was appointed the first bishop of the diocese of São Miguel Paulista , established on the same date . From 1991 to 1998 he was chairman of the sub-region South 1 of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted his age-related resignation on January 9, 2008.
