Ferndown is a small town and municipality in the district East Dorset in Dorset in southern England and lies just north of places Poole and Bournemouth and east of Wimborne Minster . It has 26,559 inhabitants (as of 2011).

Ferndown, which was called Hampreston until 1972, includes the parishes of Hampreston, Longham, Stapehill and Trickett's Cross. Ferndown is after Dorchester with 26,559 (according to the 2011 census) the second largest city in inland Dorset in terms of population. Like most towns in Dorset , Ferndown is mostly inhabited by the elderly. In 2006, 38.5 percent of the population were 60 years or older.

Ferndown is off the A31 road between Wimborne and Ringwood. The A31, the M27 and the M3 run to the east. These roads connect the outskirts of Southampton to Winchester and from there to Basingstoke and London. The A34 and M4 lead north to Newbury. To the west, the A31 connects the A35 to East Dorset and Devon . The nearest train station is in Branksome, 10.9 km away.

The nearby port of Poole offers year-round connections to Cherbourg in France and Santander in Spain . Ferries and catamarans to Guernsey , Jersey and Saint-Malo also operate seasonally . Ferndown is just 4 miles from Bournemouth International Airport . Ryanair , EasyJet , Thomsonfly , Bmibaby and Palmair fly to this airport and have scheduled flights to destinations in the UK and Europe.

On the outskirts of town are the Ferndowns and Uddens industrial areas, the largest industrial area in East Dorset and home to both small and large businesses. Ferndown Industrial Estate, Uddens Trading Estate and East Dorset Trade Park cover approximately 61 hectares. Many well-known names and important employers are represented there, such as Farrow & Ball. A variety of industries are also represented including business services, manufacturing, Retail and much more.

Ferndown has very large areas of open space, including a children's and adventure playground , six tennis courts , four soccer fields, a cricket pitch, a bowling alley , boules and croquet areas, lawns and a fully equipped skate park.

There are two golf clubs, the "Ferndown Forest Golf Club" with an 18-hole course and the "Ferndown Golf Club" with a 27-hole Heathland course, which rose to 88th place on the UK's best list in 2019/2020.

Ferndown also has a modern swimming pool, the Ferndown Leisure Center , which has two heated pools, a sports hall, a fully equipped gym, squash courts and a shooting range as well as a power pack suite.

In the cultural center of the city, the Ferndown Community Center, is the Barrington Theater in the main shopping mall Penny's Walk, which also includes a large Tesco supermarket and the branch of the district library.

There are also large expanses of forest and heathland in the Ferndown area, including the loop walk around Holtheide Nature Reserve ( Holt Heath ) and another 22.6 hectare nature reserve, Slop Bog . These heather areas originally encompassed the entire area until some residential areas were created in the early 1900s. In large parts of the forest and the heather there are many burial mounds and small ponds.

education

Ferndown School, as in much of Dorset, is based on a three tier system of elementary, middle and high schools. The "Ferndown Upper School" is a comprehensive school for students between the ages of 13 and 19 years

Ferndown Middle School accepts 9 year old students from Ferndown First School, Hampreston First School and Parley First School. School changes in Ferndown came in the late 1980s and early 1990s when the original first school was demolished to make way for a small residential area. The two middle schools were therefore merged.
