Fertőboz ( German Holling ) is a Hungarian municipality in Sopron County in Győr-Moson-Sopron County .

Geographical location

Fertőboz is located about 10 kilometers southeast of the city of Sopron , on the southern edge of Lake Neusiedl . Neighboring communities are Nagycenk , Hidegség and Balf .

history

As early as 1839, a seaside resort was built in Holling on Lake Neusiedl , which made the village famous.

In 1910 518 inhabitants lived here, of which 490 were Germans (95%) and 26 Hungarians (5%). In contrast to the many Protestant villages in the area around Ödenburg , almost all of Holling's residents belonged to the Catholic Church .

In the referendum in Ödenburg in 1921, Holling largely voted for Hungary despite its German-speaking population. This was later attributed by the Austrian side to the pressure of the Hungarian landowners on their German-speaking tenants.

After the Second World War , most of the German population was deported.
