The widower Victor Valance wanted to open a casino in Montpellier in the past . However, after the business failed, he left Paris , leaving his mother and three underage daughters - Pauline, Delphine and Juliette - alone to open casinos in the Bahamas and Canada. The eldest daughter Pauline has since graduated from the École polytechnique , now works as an employee of the French finance minister and is now fully responsible for the whole family. Now Victor is returning to Paris and convincing - without Pauline's knowledge - his mother to issue him with a power of attorney to sell the apartment building in which the whole family lives. He would like to use the proceeds to restore a neglected casino on the shores of Lake Geneva . When Pauline finds out about this, she tries to prevent her father's project by all means. Victor locks Pauline in a room in the old casino to do business.

After signing the contract, however, it turns out that Victor and his business partner Raoul Sarazin fell for the fraudster Monsieur Nash ("Züricher Bank"). When Pauline finds out about this, she threatens Nash with the judiciary, who without further ado has Victor's family kidnapped to Switzerland in order to blackmail Victor. Victor and Pauline escape the kidnapping attempt by Italian gangsters. Raoul informs the Swiss police, who free the whole family. Finally, Pauline helps finance the casino with money from England, gives up her job and takes over the business in the casino.

Filming

The shooting took place in a building in Saint-Cloud , which was built in 1935 by the pharmacist, industrialist and art collector Alfred Daniel-Brunet (1882-1943). Today it houses the Musée municipal des Avelines.

Reviews

Hans-Christoph Blumenberg von der Zeit saw fire and flames as "a very leisurely family comedy" and an "exciting cinema with ingredients that one would not have expected from such an intelligent film buff as Rappeneau". The lexicon of international films found that the film primarily "lives from the play of the two protagonists". However, they too are not in a position to “secure universal interest in the lightweight material”.
