Location of Fife in Pierce County

Fife is a city ( City ) in Pierce County in the State of Washington and a suburb of Tacoma . As of the 2010 United States Census , Fife had 9,173 residents. According to an estimate by the Office of Financial Management in 2015, the population was 9,970 people.

history

In 1940 Fife was named "Fife ... at a valley crossroads in the midst of a thickly settled berry growing and truck-gardening district is represented by a string of markets, taverns, shops, and a large, balloon-roofed dance hall along the highway "(for example:" Fife ... at the crossroads in the valley in the middle of a densely populated district where berries grow and greenhouses are represented by a chain of markets, bars, shops and a balloon-decorated dance floor along the highway "). The population in 1940 comprised 135 people. Fife was officially recognized on February 11, 1957.

Because of the increased traffic between Puyallup and Tacoma, Fife was forced to be recognized as an independent municipality, not just as an area between Interstate 5 (I-5) and Washington State Route 167 .

Fife might be named after William J. Fife, a prominent Tacoma attorney who was once head of the Washington National Guard and Lieutenant Colonel in the Philippine-American War .

economy

Fife is a small town east of Tacoma and consists primarily of commercial areas with car dealerships, warehouses and industrial properties, motels, an Indian casino, drive-through tobacco shops, fast food restaurants and other shops typically located on highways. Its proximity to the port of Tacoma , Interstate 5 and Highway 167 have contributed to the settlement of many logistics companies. Fife's tax base consists of sales taxes, use taxes, and property taxes. Fife Heights , located on a hill beyond the city limits, consists primarily of residential areas. Milton is immediately to the east and Edgewood is south of Fife.

geography

It is entirely within the Puyallup Indian Reservation , which was created primarily to gain legal independence by the Medicine Creek Treaty of 1854, but the land is almost entirely owned by non-indigenous Americans.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 15.1 km², of which 14.74 km² are land and the rest are water.

Fife lies on a mudflat in the low-lying flat area that extends the port of Tacome. This means that in some areas the water table is only 10-15 feet (about 3-5 meters) below the surface of the terrain. As the tides rise and fall in Puget Sound , the bottom surface rises and falls slightly.

The southern parts of the city lie in the floodplain of the Puyallup River . Much of the city would be damaged or destroyed if a lahar spilled into the area after a Mount Rainier eruption.
