Flag of Guernsey

The flag shows the red George Cross . A second golden cross lies above it. It refers to William the Conqueror , who carried such a cross in his flag during the Battle of Hastings .

history

In the 19th century, an ensign with a blue and white checkerboard pattern was used for Guernsey. Guernsey later used the red George Cross on a white background. Guernsey was allowed to use it for its flag in 1936.

Flags of the islands

The Alderney flag was introduced on December 20, 1993. On the flag there is a cross of St. George, in the middle of which is Alderney's coat of arms . The coat of arms shows a crowned, golden lion wildly holding a sprout on a green background with a golden border.

The island of Brecqhou ( Brechou ) received its own flag on November 23, 1967. It corresponds to the flag of Sark , to whose territory the island belongs. In addition, it bears the Brecqhouse coat of arms in the lower flight section.

The flag of Herm is white with a red George cross, which shows the coat of arms of Herm at the top left . The coat of arms is blue and is divided by a yellow diagonal stripe. Two white dolphins can be seen in the blue area and three black monks in the yellow diagonal stripe. The three black monks represent the missionaries St. Magloire, St. Sampson and St. Helier who Christianized the Channel Islands in the 6th to 9th centuries . The flag was designed by British vexillologist William Crampton . The Herms coat of arms was adopted in 1953. Around 1951 the island used a blue flag with Guernsey’s coat of arms on the flag that was raised.

The flag of Sarks shows a red St. George's Cross on a white background with two golden lions on a red background (the historical flag of Normandy ) in the upper left field. It was designed by Herbert Pitt from 1938 and adopted that same year. It initially served as the personal flag of the island's feudal lord (Seigneur or Dame de Sercq), at that time Sibyl Hathaway . Functions similar to a national flag have only been fulfilled since the current Seigneur John Michael Beaumont approved it for use in the Island Games , for which a flag was required. Sark has been participating in these international sports competitions since 1987. The Sarks flag cannot be used as a sea flag. The previous owner of the neighboring island of Brecqhou , which is connected to Sark, used the same flag, with the addition of a coat of arms in the lower right corner.
