The flag of Slovenia was adopted on June 27, 1991. Since the coat of arms was only adopted on July 20, 1994, the current form was first set on October 20, 1994.

National flag of Slovenia

The national flag is a tricolor in the Pan-Slavic colors. Like the flag of Russia , it consists of three horizontal stripes of equal size: white at the top, blue in the middle and red at the bottom.

Slovenia also has its coat of arms in the upper liek , which consists of a blue shield with a red border on the two lower sides. The sign shows two waves, which symbolize the Adriatic Sea (Jadransko morje), the three-pointed peak of Triglav (Slovenia's highest mountain) and the three gold-colored stars from the coat of arms of the Counts of Cilli ( Celje ). The coat of arms symbolizes the historical landscapes of Slovenia: Carniola , Lower Styria and the coastal region . The coat of arms has been criticized on several occasions because of its design which did not correspond to traditional heraldry .

history

Previous flags

The area of today's Slovenia belonged to the Habsburgs for several hundred years . The core area was the Carniola , which used red and blue as the national colors . The Carniolan coat of arms was a blue eagle with red claws on a silver background. The resulting colors white (for silver), blue and red corresponded to the Pan-Slavic colors and were first used in 1848, but not recognized by Austria-Hungary . Slovenia was established in 1918 as an administrative unit of Yugoslavia , or the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . The country introduced the tricolor, but only shortly afterwards its use was again banned because it contradicted the idea of a unitary state under the king.

Between 1941 and 1945, Yugoslavia was occupied by the Axis powers . During this time, Slovenian collaborators used the tricolor with the Carniolan coat of arms. Slovenes who resisted National Socialism used the tricolor with a red, five-pointed star . From January 18, 1947, a red star with a yellow border was added to the flag of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia as a symbol of communism and socialism. This flag remained in use until June 27, 1991. At that time, Slovenia was the first republic to split off from the Yugoslav state and adopt a new flag.

Suggestions for a redesign

Since the flags and coats of arms as well as the country names of Slovenia and Slovakia are very similar, Slovenia is considering changing all three.

At the moment there is a discussion about using a new national flag that will be more different from other flags in the Pan-Slavic colors. A competition run by the government won a stripe flag, in which the Triglav motif is again incorporated. Parliament still has to decide on the introduction.

More flags of Slovenia

The maritime trade and service flag has a different aspect ratio than the land-based national flag. The naval war flag corresponds to the aspect ratio of the national flag with 1: 2.

The design of the Gösch of the Slovenian Navy differs greatly from the national flag. Until 1996 a flag with the national coat of arms on a blue background was used. In order to make the flag more recognizable at sea, the colors of the coat of arms were chosen and they have been used as a tricolor since June 29, 1996.

The President of Slovenia and the country's municipalities also have their own flags.
