Flavors of Entanglement is the seventh studio album by the Canadian - American singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette . In Germany , Ireland and the Benelux countries it was released on May 30th, internationally on June 2nd and in the USA on June 10th 2008. In the German-speaking countries and in the USA the album reached top ten positions in the Charts , in Great Britain it came to position 15.

Emergence

In March 2005, Morissette told Billboard Magazine that she was ready to get started on a new project. She has already filled four notebooks with material, usually after two she starts working on an album. In October 2006, in an interview with TV Guide , she announced that the number of fully written notebooks had risen to seven and that she would start working in the studio in the next few weeks. At the same time, she described her relationship with actor Ryan Reynolds as conjugal and suggested that they would get married sooner or later. Morissette and Reynolds met in 2002 and dated for two years before dating in 2004. They had temporarily separated in June 2006, but then got back together. However, in early February 2007 they announced their final split. Reynolds subsequently entered into a relationship with Scarlett Johansson . During the split, Morissette was already working on Flavors of Entanglement . The personal crisis had a strong influence on the progress of the work.

Morissette hired Guy Sigsworth , known for his work for Björk , Seal and Madonna, as producer .

In an interview with Rolling Stone , Morissette described the album as a mixture of “friendliness and ease”, comparable to So-Called Chaos, her studio album from 2004. In addition, there is the feeling that one grips during the realization of the rock bottom to be. The album contains texts with autobiographical references, in particular to the artist's personal relationships. Morissette found a higher proportion of technical influences on the sound in her work compared to her previous work. She attributes the result of her work a high level of suitability as dance music: “ I love to dance so there's a lot of loops and beats on this record where you can dance your face off. ” (German: “I love to dance, that's why there are a lot of loops and beats that are really good to dance to. ”) Stylistically, she classifies the work as“ techno but organic ”(German:“ Techno , but organic ”).

The criticism of the magazine Blender says that Sigsworth gave the album a little Euro dance , but that it does not tie in with the musical lightness of its predecessors, but rather reminds of the power of their early works. Sigworth's synthesizer beats would only keep the melodies from sounding too gloomy.

Selected critic voices

Critics reacted mostly positively to the album. It is often praised - mostly with reference to Morissette's separation from her partner - that the artist has abandoned the streamlined and light-heartedness of the last albums Under Rug Swept and So-Called Chaos and found the emotional power that made her early work Jagged Little Pill so successful have. Reference is made several times in this context to You Oughta Know , the first single from Jagged Little Pill , in which Morissette morally denounced her ex-partner at the time. In comparison with the debut album 13 years ago, the Boston Globe found that Morissette's approach to her pain, but also her work as a whole, has developed further. On the other hand, the critic of Slant Magazine sees a problem in Morissette's maturation process, her work has lost its emotional stability and clout, the ballads, formerly Morissette's trademark, have become banal. The critique of the Ottawa Citizen discovers a balance in the interaction of content-heavy texts and modern electronic influences, which it praises as yin-yang dynamics. The album is summarized as the artist's new beginning: “ In Alanis-speak, Flavors of Entanglement marks the rebirth of a self-contained human being after being engulfed in the cocoon of coupledom. The music magazine Paste assesses this combination differently . Accordingly, the progressive sound of Sigsworth unfortunately did not manage to dominate the album, instead a chewing gum-like chorus ruined the song Underneath . Morissette's coping with separation sounded much more convincing in You Oughta Know . The criticism of the music webzine PopMatters goes even further : Flavors of Entanglement is fascinating because it is an unsettling bunch that only has a few of the characteristics that are appreciated in Alanis Morissette. Lyrically, her focus has changed from true knowledge to identifying personal demons, and in the past she was able to dig deeper from a therapeutic point of view. Also, her big voice no longer pushes itself into the center of attention as usual, she is now fighting with swirling, futuristic beats and pounding dance numbers. For the Guardian, Caroline Sullivan portrays this heaviness of pop as the positive thing about the album. She is happy about “ nifty ” (German: “chic”) music that reminds her of Depeche Mode and Kylie Minogue . Mark Edwards of the Sunday edition of the Times also highlights Sigsworth's achievement, who has managed to work out some decent melodies; the refrain of In Praise of the Vulnerable Man is strong enough to make the listener forget the text.
