She also renegotiated her contract with her label Maverick Records . Alanis Morissette initially wrote 27 songs for the album, the number was reduced to 11 during production.

Reviews

Critics reacted mostly positively to the album. The British music magazine Q ruled that the artist had thus presented “ some of the most inviting music of her career ” and continued: “ Morissette has fashioned a lyrical Trojan Horse to be wheeled into unsuspecting homes for months to come. ”(German:“ Morissette has designed a lyrical Trojan horse that will roll into innocent apartments in the next few months. ”) Music critic Robert Christgau agreed that the album showed Morissette's gift for the accessible; Here memorable lyrics have been garnished with catchy choruses.

Other critics were less euphoric. The music magazine Rolling Stone gave the album three out of five possible stars, praised the music initially as “ brawny and meticulous ” (German: “strong and accurate”), but came to the conclusion: “ Under Rug Swept just about drowns in psychobabble. While the tone of the songs, and the grain of Morissette's voice, promise intimacy, there's hardly a private detail anywhere. ”(German:“ Under Rug Swept is drowning in psychological talk. The sound of the songs and the graininess of Morissette's voice promise intimacy, but there is hardly any private detail to be found anywhere. ”) David Browne wrote for Entertainment Weekly :“ [ …] The album's garbled title is also preparation for some of the clumsiest lyrics to be heard on a pop record in years. ”(German:“ The distorted title of the album is also a preparation for some of the clumsiest lyrics that could be heard on a pop album for years. ”)
