Florence Baverel-Robert (born May 24, 1974 in Pontarlier , France ) is a former French biathlete .

Career

Florence Baverel first appeared in the Biathlon World Cup in 1994, and at the beginning of 1995 she took second place twice in the sprint and individual races in Ruhpolding. In her first two seasons, she finished two times in seventh place in the overall World Cup. Baverel won her first world championship medals with French relays and teams, until 1999 she was able to win a total of two silver and two bronze medals. In 2000 she won her first individual medal at world championships with the bronze medal in pursuit.

The successful 1990s were followed by a few years in which Florence Baverel-Robert was unable to build on the successes of earlier times. Neither at the World Championships nor the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , she could win medals. With ninth place in the overall World Cup for the 2001/02 season, the Frenchwoman was only able to achieve a top 10 placement within six years.

At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she was able to achieve the greatest success of her career. Florence Baverel-Robert, who was second five times in the Biathlon World Cup , but had never won a race, won the sprint of San Sicario and was Olympic champion. This was the first individual victory of a French woman at the Winter Olympics in biathlon and the first medal for French biathletes in twelve years. This success came as a surprise to many, as Florence Baverel-Robert was one of the best shooters in the entire field of athletes, but she was usually denied good results due to a rather weaker running form. Her Olympic victory was based on flawless shooting, with the sixth-best running time of the race Baverel-Robert was able to assert herself just ahead of the Swede Anna Carin Olofsson . The victory in the Olympic sprint race remained the only individual victory and the only gold medal in the French woman's career.

With the French relay she also won the Olympic bronze medal as well as relay bronze at the mixed world championships. The 2005/06 season ended Baverel-Robert as tenth of the overall World Cup.

At the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz , Florence Baverel-Robert was one of the most successful athletes with three silver medals. In the individual races she was behind the also faultless Norwegian Linda Grubben with faultless shooting performance , and with her own good performances she was also involved in winning the silver medals in the relay and mixed relay races. At the end of the 2006/07 season , which Baverel-Robert finished fifth overall, she announced her retirement from active biathlon.

After her active career, the mother of a daughter, who is currently pregnant with her second child, became a commentator on Eurosport's French language version . She also works as a recruiter for the French military. She is now divorced from Julien Robert . She lives in Lièvre Mont (German: Hasenberg) near the Swiss border .
