Florencio Xatruch Villagra

Florencio Xatruch Villagra (born October 21, 1811 in San Antonio de Oriente, Francisco Morazán Department , † February 15, 1893 in Managua ) was President of Honduras from March 26 to May 23, 1871 .

Life

His parents were Eugenia Villagra and Ramón Xatruch. Eugenia Villagra came from a mining family in Choluteca. Ramón Xatruch was born in Catalonia. His brother was Pedro Xatruch Villagra. In 1824 he continued his studies at the University of León (Nicaragua) . He then devoted himself to trading and traveled to Jamaica . 1826 settled in Juticalpa. He joined the forces of Domingo Sarmiento and Santos Sánchez who fought against the government of Diego Vigil Cocaña . On March 14, 1832, he and his friend José Santos Guardiola Bustillo joined the troops of José Francisco Morazán Quezada . For his participation in the fighting in Jocoro, El Salvador, in March 1832, he received the rank of Sergeant of Morazán. In 1841 he was promoted to captain (colonel) by the Minister of War José Julián Tercero in the government cabinet of Francisco Ferrera . He became a delegate to a constituent assembly in Choluteca in 1848, where he became deputy secretary. Florencio Xatruch initiated an uprising against José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos in favor of his friend Guardiola, when this failed he exiled to Nicaragua with his brother Pedro Xatruch Villagra.

1855 to 1857

Through a military service contract, which Ponciano Corral Acosta had concluded with Byron Cole, William Walker (mercenary) and his filibuster pirates in Nicaragua were engaged on the side of the Partido Liberal (Nicaragua) . Walker forced the Partido Conservador de Nicaragua under José María Estrada to a peace treaty . As part of this peace treaty , Florencio Xatruch Villagra was appointed commander of Rivas in October 1855 . Estrada promoted Xatruch to brigadier general.

Patricio Rivas , who had been led by Walker as a puppet-like president of Nicaragua, turned against Walker in 1856 and declared him an enemy of the state of Nicaragua. In northern Nicaragua the opposition forces against Walker gathered. On January 6, 1857, Florencio Xatruch Villagra was appointed commander in chief of the Nicaraguan Northern Army and the Honduran Army. Xatruch defeated Walker's troops at Rivas. The government of Guatemala awarded him the degree of Brigadier General.

Honduras

From May 22, 1858 to February 3, 1862, Xatruch was finance and war minister in the government cabinet of José Santos Guardiola Bustillo. He was entrusted with the foreign and interior ministries.

On June 10, 1862, José Rafael Carrera Turcios had Honduras invaded by troops commanded by Vicente Cerna Sandoval and occupied Ciudad de Comayagua and Llanos de Santa Rosa. José María Medina was in command of the fortress of Omoa , as such he delivered this General Carrera and followed Carrera to Guatemala, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel for this service . In 1863 Florencio Xatruch Villagra initiated an uprising, as a result of which Carrera, José María Medina, set up a counter-government to José Francisco Montes Fonseca on June 20, 1863 in Gracias. Medina appointed Xatruch as his deputy on February 15, 1864. Because of a dispute with Medina, he dismissed Xatruch from the proxy. Xatruch exiled to El Salvador, where he was in May 1876 Francisco Dueñas to commander of the garrison of Trujillo appointed.

El Salvador

In the government cabinet of Francisco Dueñas Díaz he was appointed commander in chief of the army and governor of the department of San Miguel . In April 1871, José María Medina , El Salvador declared war. Francisco Dueñas was overthrown by Mariscal Santiago González Portillo . Mariscal Santiago Gonzáles and Xatruch agreed to overthrow Medina. With an army of 300 soldiers from Honduras and 700 from El Salvador, they invaded Honduras. Xatruch proclaimed himself President of Honduras on March 26, 1871 in Nacaome. Medina entrusted his deputy Inocente Rodríguez with the governance and was personally involved in the defense of his presidency. Xatruch's troops were defeated and Xatruch fled to Nicaragua.

Nicaragua

In 1876, Xatruch became the military governor of Chinandega . Pedro Joaquín Chamorro y Alfaro promoted him to division general in the Nicaraguan army. In addition to his military career, he was a mine owner and owner of a cattle hacienda in Honduras and Nicaragua.
