Florian Benfer

Florian Benfer (* 1984 in Verden an der Aller ) is a German conductor and choir director .

biography

Florian Benfer first studied church music in Leipzig and then choral conducting with Anders Eby in Stockholm . Further studies took him to the Music Academy The Hague in 2010/11 , where he studied orchestral conducting with Kenneth Montgomery and Jac van Steen . In 2012 he completed postgraduate studies in organ with Nils Larsson (Stockholm). He attended master classes with Frieder Bernius , Stefan Parkman , Michael Radulescu , Patrick Russil and Grete Pedersen and worked as a singer in ensembles such as the Stuttgart Chamber Choir , the Lucerne Festival Academy Vocalists and the World Youth Choir.

He is artistic director of the Stockholm Chamber Choir, the German Youth Chamber Choir and the ARTON Ensemble he founded in 2008. With the Eric Ericsons Kammarkör he works mainly in the field of contemporary music. He led the ensemble with corresponding programs on tours in Scandinavia and Belgium.

He has several productions on the Stockholm Volksoper ( Folkoperan conducted) and with ensembles such as the Stockholm Radio Choir, Cappella Amsterdam, the radio choirs of the MDR, NDR och BR, SWR Vocal Ensemble, the Gustaf Sjökvists Kammarkör, Orphei Drängar , the State Youth Choir Lower Saxony , the orchestra the Stockholm Volksoper, the Swedish Wind Ensemble and the Stockholm Bach Society.

He directed choral productions for the conductors Peter Eötvös , Daniel Harding , Christopher Hogwood , Marek Janowski , Louis Langrée , Lorin Maazel , Sakari Oramo , Esa-Pekka Salonen and Masaaki Suzuki . He gained opera experience as a choir director at the Royal Stockholm Opera (2013/14 season) and at the Dutch National Opera Academy.

As a conductor and singer he has performed at festivals in Europe, Asia and North America, including the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Bachfest Leipzig , Festival van Vlaanderen , Baltic Sea Festival, chor.com and MusikTriennale Köln .

Since 2017 Benfer has been teaching as a guest lecturer for choral conducting at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing.

Prizes and awards

  • 2008 Gustaf Sjökvist scholarship for young choir conductors.
  • 2010 scholarship from the Kungliga Musikaliska Academies Stockholm.
  • 2012 Eric Ericson rese scholarship.
  • 2016 Norrbymedaljen (Johannes Norrby Medal), in recognition of his work as a choir conductor and contributions to Swedish choral music.
