Florian Cerny (born October 4, 1946 in Bavaria ) is a German-Australian actor and opera singer ( baritone ).

Cerny is the son of the conductor and composer Waldemar Cerny . His mother, Gabriele Gisela, Luise Countess Szekely, was a soprano and concert pianist. In 1967 he traveled to Australia with his parents, who had theater contracts, and later began studying law. In 1973 he married a lawyer who worked as a justice of the peace . 1973–1976 he attended the Sydney University State Conservatory for Piano and Singing, as well as the opera school with acting lessons during the same period.

He made his first appearances at the new Sydney Opera House, under the patronage of Dame Joan Sutherland . In Europe he had his training in 1976 in Vienna with Kammersängerin Hilde Zadek and in Munich with Kammersängerin Hans Hotter and Hanno Blaschke . He received his first solo contract in 1978 with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv . In Germany he received his first solo contract 1980–1983 at the Kiel Opera House as a character and hero baritone. Between 1985 and 1988 he had his first permanent engagement at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich through Wolfgang Sawallisch . The second permanent engagement from 1988 to 1991 was terminated at Cerny's request by mutual agreement for guest contracts. These lasted worldwide until around 2002, such as the Hamburg State Opera , Teatro San Carlo Naples, Grand Théâtre de Genève , English National Opera London, Melbourne State Opera , State Opera Berlin , Australian Opera Sydney, Teatro alla Scala Milan, Saxon State Opera Dresden.

Today he lives on Lake Starnberg near Munich, in New York and Sydney, and is dedicated to promoting young talent.
