The Nanaimo Airport is an international airport on Vancouver Iceland , in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is in the time zone UTC -8 ( DST -7). The airport is operated by the Nanaimo Airport Commission.

Since the place is classified as an airport of entry and officials from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are stationed there, entry from abroad is permitted.

location

The regional airport is located about 13 kilometers south-southeast of Nanaimo and about 9 kilometers north-northwest of Ladysmith . The Trans-Canada Highway ( Highway 1 ) runs south of the airport .

history

In 1942 the area of today's airport was acquired by the Royal Canadian Air Force . This set up a gliding school here and operated an emergency landing site. The airport was then leased to the city of Nanaimo after World War II and operated as a civil airport. The Canadian federal authorities' first attempt to sell the property to the city or district failed. The place finally fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. It was not until 1975 that an extensive renovation was carried out with funds from various funding programs. Further expansion work in the form of the construction of maintenance halls took place in 1985. In 1990 a new terminal building was built, combined with work on the road connection and the construction of a parking lot. In 1994 the site was sold to the Nanaimo Airport Commission, which has since been set up. The airport terminal was named in 1999 after the Nanaimo-born World War I fighter pilot Raymond Collishaw .
