Steel wings , also known as Guadalcanal - Decision in the Pacific and Jagdgeschwader Wildkatze (original title: Flying Leathernecks ), is an American war film by director Nicholas Ray from 1951.
action
Strict Major Kirby takes over a naval aviation division in place of Captain Griffin. At the Battle of Guadalcanal he had only a few planes at his disposal and a lot to master. In addition, the soldiers are attacked daily by Japanese. The pilots are very young, disobey orders and are often shot down. Kirby demands the utmost, and Captain Griffin, who has a certain closeness to the young soldiers, proves to be tougher than expected. One of them, Blithe, called Cowboy, is Griffin's brother-in-law.
Kirby struggles with the decisions he has to make. He knows that he often sends his boys on suicide missions, but success is his priority. Kirby is becoming more and more strict with his tired people. He refuses malaria- sick soldiers sick leave if planes have technical problems. The tension between Kirby and Griffin increases. Griffin sees the distress on Kirby's face, but lets his feelings guide him more.
In order to support the naval units, Kirby attacks low-altitude. Headquarters did not approve this attack technique. When the naval units are in distress during a severe Japanese attack, Kirby continues to carry out the low-level attacks despite the losses among his pilots. He lets a Japanese convoy attack and his pilots destroy it. This successful action promotes Kirby to Lieutenant Colonel. He is now able to establish the low-level tactic as an approved tactic.
After returning to his squadron, now equipped with new F4U machines, he leads his boys through the Battle of Okinawa . Just as Kirby is splitting the squadron, Griffin's brother-in-law gets into trouble. He has to land early because of a technical problem with his aircraft. At this crucial moment in the battle, Major Griffin must refuse to help his brother-in-law in order not to jeopardize the success of the mission. His brother-in-law is then shot down and dies. Major Kirby has to give up his machine, which was set on fire by the Japanese, and jump off. He injured his arm on landing and was found by Navy units. Since Kirby is now wounded, he can no longer lead his unit. He has to propose a successor. Kirby names Griffin because he has recognized that he can lead his people safely.
