The Song of Norway was a cruise ship built for Royal Caribbean International in 1970 .

history

Song of Norway

The Song of Norway was built under the hull number NB 392 in the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki and was launched on December 2, 1969 as the first newbuilding of the Royal Caribbean International shipping company. After delivery on October 5, 1970, the ship set out on November 7 on its maiden voyage to the Caribbean , where it would spend most of its career for Royal Caribbean.

In the following years, cruises became more and more popular, which is why the ship was extended by almost 30 meters from August to November 1978 by its builder Wärtsilä in Helsinki in order to be able to accommodate more passengers. The Song of Norway was the first cruise ship that was extended by adding a section. She then stayed on for almost twenty more years for Caribbean cruises. In May 1997, the ship , which had been replaced by the much larger Vision class , completed its last voyage for Royal Caribbean.

Sundream

In the same month the Song of Norway was sold under the new name Sundream to the shipping company Sun Cruises, which belonged to the tour operator Airtours . The ship spent the next seven years cruising in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. In January 2004, the Sundream finished its last voyage for Sun Cruises, which ceased operations that same year.

Dream Princess / Dream

After the end of service at Sun Cruises, the ship in Piraeus was modernized, renamed Dream Princess and sold to the Israeli shipping company Caspi Cruises . From then on the Dream Princess took cruises from Haifa . In January 2006, the ship went to New Orleans to serve as floating shelter for Tulane University after damage from Hurricane Katrina . This mission ended in June 2006, but the Dream Princess did not return to service for Caspi Cruises.

The new owner of the ship, which has now been renamed Dream , became the Lance Shipping Company, based in the Bahamas. In December 2006 the Dream took a cruise off Dubai and was then in service for Mediterranean cruises from January 2007.

On September 18, 2007, the Dream was listed at ten degrees during a cruise in the port of Rhodes . The lifeboats were cleared because there were fears that the ship would sink. However, the Dream Princess could be stabilized. The reason for the incident were technical problems in the sewage system. On November 18, 2007, the Dream collided again with a cargo ship in a strong wind in the port of Rhodes.

Clipper Pearl / Clipper Pacific

After renovation work in Kuşadası in November 2007, the ship went to its new owner Pearl Owner Ltd. in December as Clipper Pearl . over. They chartered it out in May 2008 as Clipper Pacific to the Japanese aid organization Peaceboat . A subsequently planned trip around the world was rejected due to technical deficiencies. In July 2008 the Clipper Pacific had to be brought to Florida for repairs due to a leak in New York City . The trip was finally ended after further problems in Seward, Alaska . The ship then went to Istanbul for repairs . Peaceboat, however, was no longer interested in the Clipper Pacific .

Festival / Ocean Pearl

After a long berth, the ship was briefly back in service for Caspi Cruises from July 2009 under the name Festival . In November of the same year, the festival went to Mexico-based travel company Quail Travel's Happy Cruises as Ocean Pearl . In September 2011 the ship was decommissioned and put up for sale after the operator had to file for bankruptcy.

Formosa Queen

In April 2012, the Ocean Pearl went to unknown owners in China , who renamed the ship the Formosa Queen and wanted to convert it into a casino ship. However, this project failed and the Formosa Queen was sold in November 2013 for scrapping to an unknown abort in China, who dismantled the ship.
