The Franconian Empire is characterized by a multitude of partly confusing divisions and a gradual transfer of power from the Merovingian to that of the Carolingians , which finally came to an end in 751 with the election of Pepin the Younger as king . For the sake of clarity, both sexes should be enumerated one after the other despite the temporal overlap of their respective rule.

With this renewed division of the empire through the Treaty of Verdun , the Franconian Empire ended in 843. The Carolingians died out in Lorraine in 900, in the East Franconian Empire in 911 and in the West Franconian Empire in 987.
