Franz-Josef Rehrl (born March 15, 1993 in Schladming ) is an Austrian Nordic combined athlete .

Career

Rehrl in Ramsau 2016

Rehrl, who starts for WSV Ramsau-Steiermark, made his international debut as part of the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2008 in Bois-d'Amont, France . He just missed the medal ranks as fourth in the student competition. After he regularly competed in the Alpine Cup in the following months , he won the silver medal with the relay at the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2009 in Baiersbronn . At the end of January 2010 Rehrl made his debut in the Continental Cup in Bischofshofen and was able to achieve the points straight away when he finished ninth. A few days later he started at the Junior World Championships 2010 in Hinterzarten , where he was only able to place in the midfield in both individual competitions and with the team.

Rehrl achieved his first podium finish with third place in his second appearance in the Continental Cup in January 2011 in Klingenthal, and made his debut in the World Cup in December of the same year in Ramsau . There he finished 49th and 41st. At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Erzurum , Rehrl was junior world champion with the Austrian team. In the following year he was also successful at the Junior World Championships in 2013 when he won the silver medal with the team in Liberec . Both in the sprint as fifth and in the Gundersen competition over ten kilometers as sixth, he showed a strong performance in the individual. Shortly afterwards he achieved his first World Cup points in Almaty with rank 27 . In August 2014 Rehrl achieved the points in the Grand Prix for the first time , where he was ninth in Villach , among other places . In March 2015 he achieved his second podium finish in the Continental Cup in Tchaikovsky with third place. The following season he achieved further podium finishes in this series with third place in Soldier Hollow , second place and a win in Høydalsmo and second place in Pyeongchang . At the World Cup in Lahti in February 2016, Rehrl finished third in the team sprint alongside Philipp Orter .

In the 2016/17 World Cup season , Rehrl consistently achieved the points. His best individual results of the winter were seventh places in Lahti and Chaux-Neuve . In the overall standings, Rehrl was nineteenth. The summer of 2017 did not go well for Rehrl, as he could not win any points in his four participations. At the beginning of the 2017/18 World Cup , Rehrl had a hard time, but at least reached the top thirty. Nevertheless, at the beginning of January 2018 he competed again in the Continental Cup in Klingenthal, where he was able to celebrate a victory in addition to two fourth places. In the following months Rehrl was again part of the World Cup team. After he was even able to achieve placements in the top ten, Rehrl was nominated for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . There he was only used in the Gundersen singles on the normal hill when he became the second best Austrian when he reached thirteenth place. He finished the season in eighteenth.

Rehrl made his final breakthrough in the 2018/19 season. He and Mario Seidl started winning the team sprint in Oberwiesenthal in the summer of 2018 . He also made it onto the podium in the Grand Prix for the first time in the individual as second in Villach, so that in eighth place in the overall standings he acted as a hope for the Austrian team in winter. He made it onto the podium on the second World Cup weekend in Lillehammer . Rehrl celebrated his first World Cup victory in mid-January 2019 as part of the Nordic Combined Triples in Chaux-Neuve . As a co-favorite, he traveled to the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 in his native Seefeld . He was able to live up to this role. He already won the bronze medal in the Gundersen singles from Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck and over ten kilometers, with which he won the first ÖSV medal at the home World Cup. Together with Bernhard Gruber he was also able to finish third in the team sprint on the large hill, whereas in the individual competition on the normal hill he just missed another medal in fourth. He was able to win this in the final team competition together with Gruber, Seidl and Lukas Klapfer , when he won his third bronze medal when he reached third place. Rehrl also found himself on the podium in third place with 841 points in the overall World Cup standings.

In the summer of 2019 Rehrl won two Grand Prix competitions and was finally able to win the overall Grand Prix with 415 points. After suffering a severe bruise in his ribs at the World Cup race in Trondheim in mid-February 2020, he ended his season prematurely. His best result of the season was third place in Oberstdorf , whereas in the remaining competitions he usually had no chance of the podium due to a weaker running form.

Personal

Rehrl attended elementary school in Ramsau for four years before spending another four years at the ski school in Schladming . For another five years he was a student at the boarding school for ski athletes in Stams . He then belonged to the army at the Rif base for four years . Rehrl has been training with the police since 2018.

Rehrl has two sisters, Marlene (* 1989) and Eva-Maria (* 1999).

In addition to his sporting career, Rehrl has completed training as an assistant flight instructor in paragliding.
