Franz Schmitz (architect)
Franz Schmitz (born November 8, 1832 in Cologne , † August 8, 1894 in Baden-Baden ) was a German architect of historicism . From 1859 to 1868 he was master craftsman at Cologne Cathedral , from 1890 until his death master builder at Strasbourg Cathedral .
Life
Schmitz attended the Marzellengymnasium in Cologne . From 1848 to 1852 he completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and stonemason at the cathedral construction works in Cologne . Then he became their employee. During this time he began to document the entire cathedral with its architecture and inventory both metrically and graphically. In 1859 he succeeded his teacher Friedrich von Schmidt as master craftsman, initially under master builder Ernst Friedrich Zwirner , and from 1861 under Richard Voigtel . A conflict with the cathedral building administration resulted in his resignation from the cathedral building workshop in 1868. Afterwards, as a freelance architect, he mainly carried out the construction and restoration of new churches and completed the large cathedral documentation by 1880. In 1884 he became diocesan master builder for the Archdiocese of Cologne , and in 1890 as the successor to his former student and colleague August Hartel cathedral master builder in Strasbourg . Here, too, he planned a large-scale construction documentation. In 1893 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin .
