Franz Xaver Wilhelm Ritter von Hlubek (born September 11, 1802 in Gobitschau near Sternberg , Moravia , † February 10, 1880 in Graz ) was an Austrian agronomist and agricultural writer.

Life

Franz Xaver Hlubek first attended the high school in Opava . Subsequently, he studied from 1822 to 1824 in Brno philosophy and later he studied at the University of Vienna jurisprudence , mathematics at Andreas von Ettinghausen , physics at Andreas von Baumgartner , chemistry and agriculture. Hlubek was appointed professor of agriculture and forestry in Vienna in 1830 , in Lemberg in 1832 , in Laibach in 1834 and at the Joanneum in Graz (today Graz University of Technology ) in 1840 , where he also became an advisor to the central committee of the Styrian Agricultural Society and administrator of the experimental farm and the model vineyard . In 1843 he founded a silk building association for Styria.

In 1847 he received the Danish Dannebrogorden . From May 18 to August 3, 1848 he was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly . Although non-attached, he voted with the Right Center. His successor was Franz Seraphim Archer . In 1859 he was given the title of Imperial Councilor . From 1861 to 1867 he was a member of the Steinermark Landtag . He retired in 1867. On August 11, 1868, he became a knight knighted and in 1870 he received the Order of the Iron Crown . He died on February 10, 1880 of "cerebral palsy" in Graz. He left a wife and five children

Hlubek is one of the "forerunners of agricultural natural research and one of the last defenders [...] of the humus theory ." Justus Liebig is considered to be the originator of the mineral theory and led the dispute with the supporters of the humus theory in part in a polemical manner. At the center of the dispute was the carbon and nitrogen balance of the soil. Practitioners mostly took part in the "stickstöffler" party, while research on agricultural chemistry was still in its infancy. Although Justus Liebig prevailed, Hlubek was also justified by Liebig's later relenting. In 1868 Karl Marx dealt with the first volume of Hlubeks "The Agricultural Teaching in its Full Extent based on the experiences and knowledge of the last 100 years" (1853) and made detailed excerpts from it.
