Frehley's Comet was the debut album released in 1987 by the American hard rock band Frehley's Comet .

Classification in the musical background

The lead guitarist Ace Frehley had the group Kiss leave whose founding member he was., 1982 In 1984 he worked on the Gene Simmons- produced solo album WOW by Plasmatics singer Wendy O. Williams and contributed the lead guitar parts for the track Bump and Grind . In the same year he founded the band Frehley's Comet with drummer Anton Fig , bassist John Regan, guitarist and singer Richie Scarlet and keyboardist Arthur Stead to write and publish their own material. Between its founding and 1985, the group made several demo recordings , produced by Eddie Kramer , Tony Bongiovi , Chris Kimsey and Vini Poncia , among others .

The group made their first debut in November 1984 at "SIR Sound Studios" in New York . One of the earliest known live recordings is a bootleg ( Back in the Groove ), which was recorded on March 9, 1985 at the New York club "L'Amour" and which already contains three tracks, namely Dolls , Stranger in a Strange Land and We Got Your Rock , which can also be found on the band's first studio album.

A previously signed record deal with Bronze Records expired when the label went bankrupt, but Frehley managed to secure a deal with Atlantic / Megaforce .

History of origin

The album was recorded at "Right Track Studios" and "Sound Ideas Studios" in New York City, and at "Master Sound Studios" (Astoria, NY) and "Bear Tracks" (Suffern, NY) and was released in 1987. It was produced by Eddie Kramer and Ace Frehley. Frehley's Comet contained ten titles, the first of which, Rock Soldiers , Frehley's drunkenness after his departure from Kiss (particularly the police chase of May 21, 1983 , which hit the Bronx River Parkway in New York in his DeLorean Drunk in the wrong direction while drunk and thus caused an accident). It also contained the song Into the Night , written by Russ Ballard and made famous by the television series Miami Vice .

The song Breakout was written with Eric Carr during Frehley's time at Kiss , when the song was still called Heaven . The basic pattern of the song was used by Kiss in 1992 for the title Carr Jam 1981 , but the guitar tracks were re-recorded by Bruce Kulick . The title Calling to You originally comes from the band 707, in which Tod Howarth had played, but there he had the title Megaforce . For Frehley's Comet it was completely revised and then re-recorded. It concluded with the instrumental piece Fractured, Too , which was the acoustic continuation of the instrumental Fractured Mirror from Frehley's 1978 solo Kiss album.

Before the release, there was still a line-up change: the keyboardist Rob Sabino and the guitarist Richie Scarlet were replaced by Tod Howarth, who played both rhythm guitar and keyboards.

Cover

The cover showed a comet apparently flying through space , which was a NASA photo that was used here. Although it was an album by the group, the name Ace Frehley was placed at the top, presumably for marketing reasons, so it looked like it was Frehley's solo album entitled Frehley's Comet. The band's logo was centered in the lower third of the covers.

On the back of the cover was a group photo taken by photographer Ebet Roberts. The band's debut album reached number 43 on the Billboard 200 on June 20, 1987 and stayed in the charts for 23 weeks.

publication

Frehley's Comet was released on July 7, 1987 and peaked at number 43 on the Billboard 200 . The tracks Rock Soldiers , Calling to you and Into the Night were released as singles ; Into the Night was also released as a maxi single.

reception

Metal Hammer wrote the route of the album would be "already clear after the first few sounds." The band turned "the guitar up to the stop" and let "the drums crack." That was "pure heavy rock, straightforward and straightforward here, skillful and Virtuoso there. ”Frehley pulls out all the stops, has“ everything from mere rock n 'rollers to potential chart contenders. ”There are echoes of kiss in the breakout co-authored by Eric Carr , and commercially it is written by Russ Ballard Single Into The Night and "respect for old master Alice Cooper" are paid to Dolls . What distinguishes the LP in particular is variety.
