Friedemann Dähn

Friedemann "Fried" Dähn (* 1958 in Tübingen ) is a German cellist , experimental musician and media artist .

Live and act

Dähn was born in Tübingen in 1958 and grew up in a musical family. He began to practice the piano at the age of four and had his first cello lessons at the age of ten. After leaving school, he studied classical violoncello with Johannes Goritzki at the Musikhochschule Düsseldorf , which he graduated with distinction. Tours have taken Dähn to the People's Republic of China, Russia, the USA, Brazil and all the major music centers in Europe. From 1990 to 1993 he played in the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, where he worked with artists such as Karlheinz Stockhausen , Ornette Coleman and Frank Zappa .

Dähn has been the principal cellist of the Württemberg Philharmonic in Reutlingen since 1991 . In the early 1990s, Dähn developed an electric cello and began his own musical projects in the fields of electronic and experimental music , jazz , improvisation and sound art . Dähn plays with the electro cello in several formations of the most varied musical styles and genres, including Jaap Blonk , Mike Svoboda , Markus Stockhausen , Patrick Bebelaar and Dave Douglas .

In 1999 Fried Dähn founded the international festival Creative Arts and Music Project (CAMP) together with Thomas Maos . Since then, the festival has taken place on invitation at various locations (2005 Montemor-o-Novo / Portugal, 2007 WKV Stuttgart - funded by the Federal Cultural Foundation , 2010 HfG Karlsruhe , 2011 Zagreb / ​​Croatia). In 2009 the festival celebrated its tenth anniversary at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart . Since 2012 Dähn has been a regular contributor to Zappanale in changing band formations. 2016 with his string quartet Yellow String Quartet together with Grandmothers of Invention ( Don Preston , Bunk Gardner and Ed Mann ).

Dähn has been Professor of Music and Sound at the Schwäbisch Hall University of Design since 2004 . Since 2010 he has been working as a reviewer for an agency for accreditation procedures for universities. He is also responsible for the conception of the Pop Music and Sound Art course at the new Munich Institute of Media and Musical Arts.

The trio gives its concerts preferably in old churches and special places, including in Chicago, Brussels, on the Zugspitze , the Potsdam Jazz Festival , at the Swiss Expo.02 in Biel, and in the Salzburg Cathedral .

  • (2009) Sonic Visions event series with audiovisual projects as well as electronic and interactive music in the rooms of the cultural organizer franz.K in Reutlingen . This is where Dähn's composition Spanish Cat for orchestra premiered in 2010.
