Friedrich Groschuff

Friedrich Groschuff , baptismal name: Fabian (born November 5, 1701 , otherwise birth years 1693 or 1700, in Danzig ; † December 15, 1784 in Schleiz ) was a German philologist .

Life

Friedrich Groschuff was born the son of a businessman.

In 1709 he went to the Danzig grammar school .

He initially studied theology and later also law at the University of Königsberg and the University of Leipzig , where he was matriculated on August 13, 1727 .

On the recommendation of Johann Christoph Gottsched , he became educator of the children of Chamber President Friedrich Wilhelm von Borcke in Kassel , then accompanied Adolph Wilhelm Heinrich von der Tann (1736–1778) to the University of Marburg as Ephorus , was Hofmeister in Strasbourg and received the secretary and Hofmeister position for the education of Adolf von Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld in Barchfeld .

In 1760 he came to Eutin as secretary and court master of Prince Peter Friedrich Wilhelm and, after he had finished his activity there, received a gift of money and the title of ducal Holstein judiciary . He then lived as a private citizen in Schleiz and devoted himself to his philological studies.

From 1762 to 1780 he was a member of the council of Schleiz.

Friedrich Groschuff was married to Johann Dorothea (née Hofmann) (1724–1803) since 1760; they had three daughters together:

  • August Friederica Wilhelmine Groschuff (1761–1789);
  • Emilia Henrietta Groschuff (* 1763);
  • Henriette Louise Wilhelmine Groschuff (* 1767).

Writing

Friedrich Groschuff devoted himself particularly to antiquity and wrote treatises on etymological questions. He had an extensive correspondence with Johann Christoph Gottsched.
