Friedrich Osten (painter)
Friedrich Osten (born June 5, 1816 in Hanover , † September 9, 1849 in Athens ) was a German architect , painter , building historian , university professor and art writer. In the history of architecture he is considered to be the “pioneer of the Hanoverian round arch style ”.
Life
Friedrich Osten was born in 1816 as the son of an innkeeper at the time of the Kingdom of Hanover in the royal seat of the former electorate, which was long orphaned by the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover . As one of the first students at the Higher Trade School in Hanover , which was founded in 1831 and later became the Leibniz University of Hanover , he studied there from 1831 to 1836 and then worked there as an employee of Ernst Ebeling . The painter sent his own work to various exhibitions at the Kunstverein Hannover .
In the years 1840 to 1842 the artist undertook a trip to Italy (or was in Rome in 1840/1846 ), after which he gave several lectures on the architecture of Lombardy in his hometown . He gave the impetus for the development of the Hanoverian round arch style , through which, for example, he formed the teacher Ernst Ebeling himself into an early representative of this architectural style . In 1846, Friedrich Osten became “Second Teacher” for architecture at the Higher Trade School, there specifically for the “artistic direction”.
During the German Revolution in 1848, Friedrich Osten sent a manifesto printed by the Jänecke brothers to the parliament of the Frankfurt National Assembly . In the pamphlet he commented on the construction tasks of a democratic state , called for a reform of the architecture study and in particular the admission of independent architects to public construction tasks in order to promote competition as a whole, and especially in the formulation of architectural spaces.

Osten died in 1849 during a study trip to Greece . The vacant position at the higher trade school in Hanover was then occupied by Ost's friend Conrad Wilhelm Hase , who was previously only employed on a temporary basis, but after the unexpected death of his friend, however, increasingly taught history and especially ancient and medieval building history.
Archival material
Drawings from the East are mainly in private ownership, some drawings are said to have been kept in the Kestnermuseum , including “his portrait, signed v. Kestner ”. The city archive of Hanover holds the archives of the architect primarily his correspondence.
