Friedrich Franz "Fritz" Steininger (born April 7, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Fritz Steininger grew up in Eggenburg ( Lower Austria ). He also attended elementary school there and then the Realgymnasium in Vienna, where he passed his Matura with distinction in 1957 . In the same year he began studying palaeontology (with Othmar Kühn , Adolf Papp and Erich Thenius ) at the University of Vienna , in connection with zoology (with Wilhelm Marinelli , Wilhelm Kühnelt , Rupert Riedl and Anneliese Strenger ) geology, (with Eberhard Clar , Christof Exner , Alexander Tollmann and Walter Medwenitsch), sedimentology (with Hans Wieseneder ) and botany (with Karl Höfler and Lothar Geitler ). He completed his studies in May 1962 with a doctorate in philosophy, followed in 1969 by the post-doctoral thesis on The Eggenburg Layer Series and its Stratotype in the Neogene of the Austrian part of the Central Paratethys and the license to teach paleontology.

From the beginning of 1959 to mid-1962 Steininger was a research assistant at the Vienna Institute for Paleontology and then a university assistant at the same location until 1972 and senior assistant from 1972 to 1977. In December 1977 he was appointed associate professor for invertebrate palaeontology at the University of Vienna and at the end of 1984 at the same place as full professor for biostratigraphy . From September 1995 to October 2005 he was director of the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt am Main and at the same time professor of historical geology and paleontology at the University of Frankfurt am Main . After his retirement he moved back to Eggenburg.

Steininger has published nearly 400 scientific papers, in particular on topics of life and the environment over the past 65 million years and with a special focus on neogene biostratigraphy and the reconstruction of the geography of the Mediterranean region and its adjacent areas, the Paratethys , using fossil fuels Mussels and snails. In addition, various interdisciplinary works, especially in cooperation with the Austrian institutes for prehistory and archeology, on the nutritional strategies of the prehistoric population and on questions of natural materials and their resources.

Due to his close ties to Eggenburg, his ancestors were very influential here for a long time, Fritz Steininger is also scientifically active in this city. As chairman of the Krahuletz Society - succeeding Heinrich Reinhart - he played a leading role in the redesign and reinterpretation of the Krahuletz Museum in Eggenburg, for which he designed numerous special exhibitions over the decades. Together with Herwig Friesinger , he also made a decisive contribution to the initiation and founding of the Kamptal cultural park .
