Friedrich von Maltzahn (politician)

Carl Friedrich Albrecht Freiherr von Maltzahn , sometimes erroneously Friedrich von Maltzan and with the property name Friedrich von Maltzahn-Lenschow (born March 26, 1807 in Herzberg , † October 21, 1888 in Gützkow (Mecklenburg) , today a district of Röckwitz ) was a Mecklenburg landowner and Politician.

Life

origin

Friedrich von Maltzahn (no. 1140 of the gender census ) came from the Lenschow branch of his extensive family. He was a son and the youngest of six children of the Prussian Privy Councilor and Oberhofmarschall, as well as heir to Duchow, Herzberg and Lenschow, Baron Burchard Friedrich von Maltzahn (# 962; 1773-1837) and his first wife Luise (Juliane Friederike), née. von Schilden (1778–1807).

In 1802, Burchard Friedrich von Maltzahn acquired the Herzberg and Lenschow estates from Friedrich Wilhelm Ulrich von Plessen .

education and profession

Friedrich von Maltzahn received his first lessons at home, then moved to Schulpforta , and then went through high schools in Berlin and Merseburg . After passing his school leaving examination, he first studied law in Berlin , then forest science in Eberswalde .

Herzberg manor house

In 1836 he took over the Lenschow estate from his father, which became his residential property, and after his father's death also the Herzberg estate. His wife also inherited the old Maltzahnsche Gut Schossow , which he sold on in 1843 due to the considerable debts it had. In 1856 he also sold Herzberg.

As a member of parliament in 1848, he was a member of the Mecklenburg parliamentary assembly for the constituency of Mecklenburg-Schwerin 44 / Benthen . Here he joined the conservative faction of the right and became a member of the school committee. On April 12, 1849, he resigned from his mandate.

In Lenschow, Maltzahn set up a sheep farm that received international attention and earned him extensive business relationships around the world. For the wool from his Negretti herd, Maltzahn received a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1855 . After the merino meat sheep became increasingly important and the price of wool fell, keeping Maltzahn no longer paid off. The attempt to open a stud was thwarted by a snot epidemic . Eventually he had to sell Lenschow, but went bankrupt before that in 1873 . In 1871 he sold the Lenschow estate to Wilhelm Vollrath August von Treuenfels .

He spent his twilight years with his son on his Fideikommiss Gützkow , who came to him from maternal inheritance, and was buried in the family chapel in the churchyard in Röckwitz .

family

Maltzahn married Countess (Friederike Wilhelmine Elisabeth) Amalie, born in 1836 . von Moltke (1817–1902), heiress of the Gützkow (Mecklenburg) and Röckwitz estates. In the marriage, five children were born on Lenschow:
