Fritz Klingbeil (born November 8, 1936 in Berlin ), grew up in Hameln , Lower Saxony, is a German painter , sculptor and object artist of concrete-constructive art .

life and work

Fritz Klingbeil began studying painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart in 1959 with Professor Heinrich Wildemann . After three years of study and one year in Paris , he moved to Düsseldorf in 1964 , where he lived and worked until 2001. Immediately after his stay in Paris, Klingbeil began his consistently constructive work. Abstracted figures can already be found in the early paintings from his student days at the Stuttgart Art Academy, but Klingbeil is now consistently moving towards geometric abstraction . Its working principle is to reduce it to the essentials.

He designed studies for his paintings on graph paper, among other things . He used - and still uses - Lego bricks as working materials for both pictures and his three-dimensional objects . Different variations, shapes and groups of shapes can be produced and tried out.

“At the end of the 1960s, Klingbeil discovered the material Plexiglas at the Düsseldorf model maker Pfeiffer & Voss. The simplicity of the smooth and shiny surfaces and the high precision of the workmanship characterize all of his Plexiglas sculptures, which are mostly produced as individual works and sometimes as edition objects. "

Klingbeil reduced his choice of colors to the basic colors red, blue and yellow and the non-colors black and white. From the mid-1960s onwards, the triad of black, white and red would characterize his work in particular.

In 1968 Klingbeil had his first solo exhibition in the Reckermann Gallery in Cologne. In 1969 the next solo exhibitions followed in the Rive Droite gallery by Jean Larcade in Paris and in the Denise René Hans Mayer gallery in Krefeld. The size of the work increases to over two and a half meters high, slim pillars made of Plexiglas . In the late 1970s, Klingbeil took on land art influences. Installations in landscapes with objects made of wood and plastic were created.

In 1980, Klingbeil had a studio exhibition at the Christel Gallery in Stockholm, which was then directed by Axel Knipschild. A year later, Knipschild took over the gallery and together with Monica Urwitz founded the Konstruktiv Tendens gallery. In 1983 Klingbeil's solo exhibition took place there. In the 1990s, Klingbeil was able to show his work again in France as part of the exhibition activities of the Repères (Association de soutien aux arts plastiques contemporains) initiated by Eva-Maria Fruhtrunk.

“Fritz Klingbeil's work lives through the charm of ever-newly found orders. Freedom and playful freedom unfold in it, which are by no means arbitrary, but consistently follow a constructive logic. Like building blocks, the artistic elements enter into connections and dissolve them again, are they multiplied or act individually. They seem scalable in their size. They are surrounded by white picture space, white spaces and walls. The painted figures organize the picture surface, the picture bodies the wall surfaces, the sculptures the space. "

- Almut Weinland, 2017

The artist, who moved to Berlin in 2001, is still working on the variations of his theme today.

Fritz Klingbeil is a member of the West German Artists Association , in whose overview exhibitions he has participated eight times since 1979, most recently in 2019 at the Osthaus Museum Hagen .
