Fritz Machlup
Friedrich Eduard Machlup (until 1940: Machlup-Wolf , born December 15, 1902 in Wiener Neustadt , Austria-Hungary , † January 30, 1983 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an Austro-American economist . He was one of the first economists to theoretically describe the importance of knowledge as an economic resource .
Life
Fritz Machlup was born in 1902 as the son of a cardboard box manufacturer; his mother Cécile Machlup was a respected photographer. From 1920 he studied a. a. with Friedrich von Wieser and Ludwig von Mises at the University of Vienna Economics. As early as 1923 he received his doctorate on the basis of a currency theoretical study on gold. Machlup received a Rockefeller Scholarship for the USA in 1933 and accepted a professorship at the University of Buffalo in 1935. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, he emigrated to the USA and in 1940 took on the US citizenship.
He taught at the University of Buffalo (1935–47), Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (1947–59) and Princeton University (1960–83). In 1966 Machlup standing American Economic Association as president-elect before.

Machlup's main work is the book The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States , published in 1962 . With his theories about knowledge as an economic resource and his analytical investigation of structures for knowledge distribution, he was instrumental in the development of information economics . He was instrumental in popularizing the concept of the information society .
Machlup also submitted an extensive study of whether it makes sense from an economic point of view to protect inventions through patents.
