Fritz Wiedemann (artist)

Fritz Wiedemann (born April 10, 1920 in Gimmeldingen ; † December 24, 1987 in Mußbach , both today districts of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) was a painter and sculptor in the Palatinate ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

Life

Education and career

From 1934 to 1938, Wiedemann did an apprenticeship as wood carver before the Second World War interrupted his career. He then completed a course of studies at the academies of fine arts in Nuremberg and Karlsruhe and was a. a. Student of Prof. Erich Heckel .

Between 1937 and 1967, Wiedemann took various study trips to Italy, Austria, France and Holland. From 1952 to 1963 he worked in his studio in Gimmeldingen, from 1964 to 1966 in Neustadt. In addition to carrying out various public commissions, he organized solo exhibitions of his own works and also participated in various art exhibitions at home and abroad. Exhibitions - his first was in 1954 - took place among others. a. in Bad Bergzabern , Bielefeld , Heidelberg , Kaiserslautern , Kandel , Kirchheimbolanden , Landau , Ludwigshafen , Mâcon (Neustadt's French twin town), Mannheim , Nuremberg , Pirmasens , Regensburg , Speyer and on the island of Sylt .

From 1964 on, Wiedemann dedicated himself to the restoration and expansion of an old winegrower's house in Mußbach, in 1966 the Fritz Wiedemann Society was founded. In 1967 he opened the Eselsburg in the restored winegrower's house , for the facade of which he made bizarre sculptures out of sandstone . The Eselsburg served him as a studio during the last 20 years of his life, and he also ran a wine tavern of the same name - initially as a hobby cook and later professionally .

Wiedemann's works are not only owned by private collectors, but also by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern and his hometown Neustadt. The Eselsburg wine tavern, which was run by his son Peter, who also worked as a painter and sculptor, from 1985 onwards has housed a permanent exhibition with numerous bizarre figures and Expressionist pictures by Wiedemann. The son sold the wine tavern in 2008 to the restaurateur Anette Ueberschaer.

Works

Wiedemann's style is often compared with that of Marc Chagall , because like him he created colorful and sensual nudes. Wiedemann often chose his home region, the Palatinate, as well as its people and products, the winemakers , the vines and the wine as a topic .
