In the first group match, the English faced Belgium. England took the lead in the 26th minute through Wilkins, three minutes later Ceulemans scored the 1-1 and thus the final score of the game. In the second group game, England had to face hosts Italy. Tardelli scored the 1-0 goal in the 79th minute and England had no more chances of winning the European championship at most in third place. These hopes also had to be buried despite a 2-1 win against Spain as Italy and Belgium drew 0-0 and both teams rose.
