As expected, the favorite Argentina prevailed in Group 1. In the third game of the group, Chile achieved its first World Cup victory. Mexico was dispatched 3-0 in front of 500 visitors. Even the French could not hold their own against the Chileans. The half right Subiabre got the 1-0 final score for the South Americans in the 64th minute. However, against Argentina there was a 3-1 defeat in the last game, which meant the group victory for the Argentines. Chile finished second, which was not enough to participate in the semi-finals.
