The USA competed in Group 4 with Belgium and Paraguay. After the surprisingly high 3-0 opener win against Belgium, the United States also won against Paraguay, which was rated stronger, again 3-0, with Patenaude shooting the first three-pack in World Cup history. The USA won Group 4 with two wins and made it to the semi-finals. There they met Argentina, the winner of Group 1.
Semifinals

Argentina | - | United States | 6: 1 (1: 0) |
Special Incidents: Tracy (USA) played with a broken leg from the 10th minute until half time; Goalkeeper Douglas (USA) played with a twisted knee from the 45th minute; Auld (USA) will play under chloroform anesthesia from the middle of the second half after a facial injury. Substitutions were not allowed at the time.
The United States was hopelessly inferior to Argentina. It was only in the 89th minute that Jim Brown scored the consolation goal to make it 1: 6. Argentina moved into the final and the USA had to say goodbye to the tournament with their best result to date.
3rd place match
A placement game between the two losers of the semi-finals did not take place in 1930; this was only introduced in 1934 . Thus, the US footballers can consider themselves together with Yugoslavia as third in the World Cup. With a total of four goals, Bert Patenaude was the third top scorer in this tournament behind the Argentinian Stábile (8) and the Uruguayan Cea (5).
