Fuchsteufelswild is a German folk rock band from Regensburg .

history

Front man Bastian Brenner and guitarist Stefan "Wuschel" Fridrich at the Spectaculum Mundi 2016 in Munich

Fuchsteufelswild was founded in spring 2014 by Matthias “Mazze” Huber and Basti “Cordoban” Brenner. Huber and Brenner met in the band Gaudium Brachjalis, in which Bastian Brenner helped out as a bagpiper.

The musical beginnings were therefore still strongly based on medieval market music . However, at this point they tried to do something different. They experimented with influences from various creative directions, such as rap / slam poetry , Irish folk , Bavarian brass and modern rock arrangements. A demo CD was recorded under the title Um Haaresbreite . The composition of the band changed during the recording to By a hair's breadth , accordingly the direction of the band changed again, and a folky course was taken.

From market music to folk

The change in course also meant that there were some changes in line-up between late 2014 and early 2015. Some members left the band, partly for private, partly for professional reasons. At the same time, Bastian Brenner and Stefan Fridrich, who has since joined the band, began composing the debut album Weltenmeer . World Sea was set up as a concept album and deals with fairy tales , myths and legends . The album was produced by Robert "Hubi" Hoffmann.

As this album was to be officially released, the search for a label and a distributor began. Thanks to the support of the Berlin musicians from Corvus Corax , Edel SE was able to win a partner for the publication. The sub-label FOXY Records was founded for this purpose.

Debut with Weltenmeer

The debut album Weltenmeer was released in February 2016 and was extremely well received by fans and the trade press. The Zillo Medieval wrote: “The musicians create a kind of music that is very difficult to put in a 'drawer' - which is a good thing. [...] All in all, 'Weltenmeer' offers something for every taste and actually lets the listener be on the move on a sea. There are a few more wisdoms and truths along the way, but they come without a raised index finger. Can I have some more, please!"

For their debut, the Regensburg formation was able to win over Norri Drescher from Corvus Corax (Davul and percussion with Eisenhans) and Ben Metzner, the frontman of the musketeer rock formation D'Artagnan, who sings the title Wie der Wind in a duet with Bastian Brenner .

Live ... worlds more!

A good month after the release of their debut album, Fuchsteufelswild announced that they wanted to use a headline show on the Regensburg Spectaculum for a live CD / DVD production. For this purpose, a crowdfunding campaign was started on the startnext platform. The campaign was successful, and so on December 16, 2016, exactly five months after the concert, the live CD / DVD was released ... worlds more! There were also many guest musicians, such as Lauren “Laui” Weser from Nachtgeschrei with hurdy-gurdy and vocals and Pan Peter and Jordon from Corvus Corax accompanied them with bagpipes and shawm. Grimme Prize winner Tommy Krappweis publishes with Die Füchsen a new setting of his text A real true hero from the movie Mara and the Fire Bringer , for which Krappweis had recorded a version of the song with the group Schandmaul . Also with ... worlds more! can convince the Füchse audience and trade press again, writes the online magazine Mindbreed: “'Fuchsteufelswild' are releasing their first live DVD quite early in the band's history. But don't worry, this release has its raison d'etre. With so many guests, this joy of playing and the enthusiastic audience, it was actually time to create a film document. A great live DVD, which is probably one of the best releases in this genre. "

King pointer

At the beginning of 2018, Fuchsteufelswild announced that they would release a new studio album at the end of the year. The title King Pointer was also announced shortly afterwards. The album was released on February 1, 2019 via FOXY Records / Edel. The album contains 15 tracks, including an instrumental. It was produced in the “Reh Mit Rucksack Studio” by Valentin “Tini” Damjantschitsch. Holly Loose, the singer of the Last Instance , is a guest singer on the song Zwei Brüder .

Darkmusicworld.de writes about the album:

“The Regensburg folk rockers 'Fuchsteufelswild' were hardworking and deliver 15 titles, all of which have a slightly different signature than the previous works. The basic character has become much more rock, due to the dominance of the distorted rock guitar. The album is finely mixed and electronic effects have been subtly interspersed. What has remained, however, are the great texts, which are both suitable for the ears of our time and also take up age-old topics and motifs in order to tell a story whose core message is thoroughly socially critical and can be applied to today's conditions. Even if the medieval folk influence has been withdrawn, the titles are played with so much charm and passion that there is no doubt about their suitability for the stage. On the contrary, that makes you want more. "

style

In addition to the classical instruments of rock music (bass, drums, acoustic and electric guitar), the band uses various folk instruments such as violin, concertina and flute in their music. Medieval instruments such as the shawm and bagpipe are also used. They use the market bagpipe, which is more typical of medieval rock, whereby the way of playing is based more on folk versions of this instrument. In addition, the band regularly uses tuba or sousaphone as bass.

The German texts often have a medieval coloring or metaphor. Nonetheless, the band deals with current issues by cleverly hiding them behind these metaphors. When stories are retold, the band often tries to create a current reference. Rapped parts of the text can often be found in songs.
